Honda to re-enter premium SUV space with ZR-V launch tomorrow in India
Honda is set to re-enter India's premium SUV space with the launch of the hybrid-powered Honda ZR-V tomorrow, bringing upscale features, sporty styling and strong-hybrid technology.
by Saumya Shubham Jha · India TodayJapanese carmaker Honda is set to expand its premium portfolio in India with the launch of the Honda ZR-V tomorrow. The SUV will mark Honda’s return to the premium CBU space after the discontinuation of the Accord Hybrid..
Positioned above the Honda Elevate, the ZR-V e:HEV will target buyers looking for a premium five-seat SUV with a strong focus on refinement..
Expected price and positioning
The ZR-V e:HEV is expected to arrive in India via the completely built unit (CBU) route, which means pricing is likely to remain on the premium side. Industry estimates suggest the SUV could be priced between Rs 40 lakh and Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom), depending on the variant and equipment level offered for India.
At this price point, the ZR-V will compete with premium SUVs such as the Volkswagen Tiguan, Skoda Kodiaq and Jeep Meridian. Unlike most of its rivals, however, the Honda will focus on a two-row, five-seat layout combined with a strong-hybrid powertrain.
Exterior design
Compared to Honda’s upright SUV designs, the ZR-V adopts a sleeker silhouette with a wider stance and more fluid body lines aimed at enhancing its urban appeal.
The front fascia is expected to feature a large grille with chrome detailing, slim LED headlamps and sculpted bumpers with sporty air-channel elements. Gloss-black cladding along the lower sections should add contrast to the exterior design.
At the rear, the SUV is likely to get wraparound LED tail-lamps, a blacked-out bumper section and dual exhaust finishers linked by a chrome strip. Depending on the variant, alloy wheel sizes could range from 17 inches to 19 inches.
Internationally, the ZR-V measures around 4.56 metres in length, giving it dimensions comparable to several premium mid-size SUVs sold in India.
Strong-hybrid powertrain to come
Honda ZR-V will arrive exclusively with the brand’s e:HEV strong-hybrid technology.
The SUV uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine operating on the Atkinson cycle and paired with two electric motors. The petrol engine alone produces 143bhp and 186Nm, while the combined hybrid system output stands at 184bhp and 315Nm.
Power will be sent to the front wheels through an e-CVT automatic gearbox. While overseas markets offer both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions, the India-spec model is expected to remain front-wheel drive only.
The hybrid setup is expected to prioritise smoothness, low running costs and silent city driving, while also delivering stronger performance than conventional naturally aspirated petrol SUVs in this segment.
Interior and features
Inside, the ZR-V is expected to feature a premium cabin layout with a strong emphasis on practicality and user-friendly controls. Unlike many newer SUVs that rely heavily on touchscreen-based functions, the Honda retains several physical buttons and rotary controls for climate and audio operations.
Expected features include:
- Large freestanding touchscreen infotainment system
- Fully digital driver’s display
- Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
- Dual-zone climate control
- Powered front seats with memory function
- Wireless phone charger
- Ambient lighting
- Panoramic sunroof
- Powered tailgate
- Premium Bose sound system
- ADAS
Honda is also expected to equip the SUV with its advanced Honda Sensing suite. The package is likely to include Level 2 ADAS functions such as:
- Adaptive cruise control
- Lane keep assist
- Collision mitigation braking
- Blind-spot monitoring
Other safety equipment is expected to include six airbags, electronic stability control, a rear-view camera and parking sensors.
A niche product in India
The ZR-V will not arrive as a high-volume product due to its expected pricing and CBU status, but it represents an important step for Honda’s India strategy. Alongside the upcoming facelifted Honda City, the ZR-V will help strengthen the company’s premium and hybrid-focused image in the market.
