Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to give the Brezza its first major update since the second-generation model arrived in 2022. The refreshed compact SUV is expected to make its debut on July 23, bringing a mix of cosmetic revisions, feature upgrades and, most significantly, a new turbo-petrol powertrain.

The highlight of the update is likely to be the introduction of Maruti Suzuki's 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo-petrol engine, currently seen in the Fronx. In that application, the three-cylinder motor develops 100bhp and 148Nm of torque, and is expected to be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission in the Brezza. Recent test mules spotted on Indian roads featuring a six-speed gear lever have further strengthened speculation about the new drivetrain.

If introduced, the turbo-petrol option would fill one of the Brezza's biggest gaps in the segment. Rivals such as the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV 3XO and Skoda Kylaq already offer turbocharged petrol engines, while the Brezza has so far relied solely on its 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit.

The smaller-capacity engine could also bring a pricing advantage. Under India's GST structure, sub-four-metre petrol vehicles with engines up to 1,200cc attract an 18 per cent GST rate, compared to the higher tax applicable to larger petrol engines. If Maruti Suzuki passes on the tax benefit, the turbo-petrol variants could be priced competitively despite offering improved performance.

The existing 1.5-litre petrol engine is expected to remain on sale alongside the new powertrain. Maruti Suzuki is also likely to continue offering a CNG version, giving customers multiple choices based on performance, fuel efficiency and running costs.

Beyond the mechanical changes, the facelift is expected to receive subtle styling revisions rather than a complete redesign. The front bumper is likely to be reworked, while the lighting elements could receive updated detailing. At the rear, the LED tail-lamps may feature a connected lighting signature similar to newer Maruti Suzuki SUVs. Freshly designed alloy wheels are also expected to be part of the update.

Inside the cabin, the overall dashboard layout is likely to remain familiar, but premium trim finishes and new upholstery options are expected. The equipment list could see a significant boost with the addition of a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, replacing the current 9-inch unit. Other expected additions include a powered driver's seat, ventilated front seats, ambient lighting and front parking sensors.

The updated Brezza is expected to command a slight premium over the outgoing model. Once launched, it will continue to compete in one of India's most fiercely contested compact SUV segments against the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Kia Sonet, Kia Syros, Mahindra XUV 3XO and Skoda Kylaq.
