July 2026 sales: Maruti nears 2 lakh mark as Tata stays ahead of Mahindra

India's passenger vehicle market posted strong growth in July 2026, led by Maruti Suzuki's near two lakh-unit sales. Tata Motors retained second place over Mahindra, while Hyundai, Toyota and Kia recorded healthy gains.

India's passenger vehicle market maintained its growth momentum in July 2026, with most major manufacturers reporting stronger dispatches compared to June. Maruti Suzuki remained firmly in control of the market by closing in on the two lakh-unit milestone, while Tata Motors held on to the second spot, edging out Mahindra by just over 2,500 units.

Hyundai staged a sharp comeback after supply disruptions affected its June output, and Toyota and Kia also registered healthy gains to round off the top six manufacturers for the month.

Maruti Suzuki extends its lead

Maruti Suzuki reported domestic passenger vehicle sales of 196,203 units in July, marking a 42 percent year-on-year increase and a significant jump from the 147,187 units dispatched in June.

The company's utility vehicle portfolio, including the Brezza, Ertiga, e Vitara, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, Victoris and XL6, contributed 78,851 units. Compact and mid-size cars continued to account for the largest share of volumes, with the Baleno, Swift, Dzire and WagonR collectively recording 90,822 units. Sales of the Alto and S-Presso stood at 12,634 units during the month.

Tata retains second position

Tata Motors dispatched 62,611 passenger vehicles in the domestic market, registering the highest year-on-year growth among the leading carmakers at 58 percent. The company also managed to improve slightly over June's tally of 62,076 units.

The Punch recorded its highest-ever monthly sales, while Tata's electric vehicle business crossed the 15,000-unit monthly wholesale milestone for the first time.

Mahindra remains close behind

Mahindra reported domestic SUV sales of 60,048 units in July, up 20 percent year-on-year. While the figure was marginally lower than the 60,393 units sold in June, the company remained within touching distance of Tata Motors in the monthly rankings.

Mahindra is expected to receive a boost in the coming weeks with the launch of the updated Scorpio N, which is likely to strengthen its position ahead of the festive season.

Hyundai bounces back after June setback

Hyundai posted one of the strongest month-on-month recoveries in July, dispatching 54,210 vehicles in the domestic market compared to 39,635 units in June. The rebound follows production disruptions caused by a fire at one of its suppliers last month.

The Creta remained Hyundai's biggest volume contributor with 18,088 units—its best monthly performance of calendar year 2026—while the i20 registered its highest monthly sales of the year at 6,738 units.

Toyota records steady growth

Toyota Kirloskar Motor sold 30,516 vehicles in July, reflecting a 5 percent year-on-year increase and an improvement over the 28,441 units recorded in June.

The Innova Hycross, Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Glanza continued to anchor the company's sales performance. Between January and July, Toyota's domestic dispatches reached 233,854 units, up 13 percent year-on-year. Sales during the first four months of FY2027 (April-July) also grew 8 percent to 128,746 units.

Kia logs its best-ever July

Kia India recorded its highest July wholesale volume by dispatching 28,200 vehicles, a 27 percent increase over the same month last year and higher than the 24,552 units sold in June.

The Seltos continued to lead the brand's portfolio, consistently averaging over 10,000 units per month in 2026. Meanwhile, the recently introduced Syros EV has received a strong initial market response, contributing to the company's positive momentum.

July highlighted a broad-based recovery for India's passenger vehicle industry. While Maruti Suzuki further widened its lead at the top, the battle for the second position remained intensely competitive, with Tata Motors narrowly staying ahead of Mahindra. Hyundai's recovery, coupled with steady performances from Toyota and Kia, suggests the industry is entering the festive season on a strong footing.
