The Mahindra electric-origin SUVs have created quite a stir in the Indian electric car segment. We have already told you how the Mahindra BE 6e performs and now it is the turn of the XEV 9e. So let’s get on with it.

Mahindra XEV 9e: Design and details

The Mahindra XEV 9e is a large electric SUV. It measures in at 4,789mm in length, is 1,907mm wide and stands tall at 1,694mm. Much like its smaller sibling, the Mahindra XEV 9e too comes with a rather unique design. The front end is dominated by the large LED light panel, which is an excellent visual. The grille is absent but the section gets a grille-like detail which looks cool. Under the bonnet resides a large frunk that can gobble up 150 litres. In profile, the Mahindra XEV 9e sure look massive. The 20-inch wheels look great and fill up the wheel wells with ease. The sweeping roof line is also a cool element. This was first seen many years back when Mahindra showcased a coupe SUV concept based on the XUV 500. The door handles at the back have also been repositioned on the rear door next to then C-pillar to ensure a smooth shoulder line. The rear section feels massive and once again is dominated by the LED light panel. The electric tailgate rises to reveal a large and flat 663-litre boot. While the boot is large enough, the loading lip is a bit high and one will have to lift the luggage up.

The Mahindra XEV 9e is a coupe SUV and it sure looks splendid.

Mahindra XEV 9e: Interiors, features, space

The Mahindra XEV 9e sure looks futuristic but is no match when compared with the 6e. But there is much to excite the family man. The dash comprises triple 12.3-inch screens with one being dedicated to the front passenger. The centre unit operates most functions of the vehicle including AC and seat ventilation as well. As we had said in the case of the 6e, we would prefer dedicated slots for these controls to make it easy for the driver to operate it on the go. The instrument console is also comprehensive and changes as per the drive mode selected. The centre console is large and offers plenty of space for stuff. The spaceship-inspired key though does not have a dedicated launch pad. The seats are large and are rather comfortable. The moon roof also comes with light panels which sure look cool and help increase the feeling of space.

There are three screens offered on the dashboard. Each screen is a 12.3-inch unit. The passenger gets his or her dedicated screen and can enjoy the drive.

At the back, space is found aplenty and there are Type-C charge ports for all. The seat is comfortable too and can accommodate three with ease. The INGLO platform also allows for a flat floor which adds to the comfort levels. The Mahindra XEV 9e also comes with a mega 16-speaker audio system which offers a rich sound experience. It can also park automatically, much like its cousin. A unique inclusion is a camera on the roof, part of Mahindra’s Driver and Occupant Monitoring System. The camera has multiple uses. It very effectively monitors driver alertness and can also be used for video calls or as a security device. Both the EVs come with AI and there are numerous functionalities attached to it.

The back seat is very comfortable and one can opt for optional entertainment screens as well.

Mahindra XEV 9e: Powertrain, battery packs, range

Just like the BE 6e, the XEV 9e is also being offered with a choice of two battery packs. The smaller one comprises of a 59kWh battery while the bigger battery pack is a 79kWh unit. Power outputs are rated at 170kW and 210kW, while torque output stands at 380Nm. The range offered is 542km for the smaller unit and 656km for the bigger unit. Both vehicles are based on the same INGLO platform and as a result, the technologies are shared too. So the XEV 9e comes with semi-active dampers and a unique steering system that features a variable gear ratio steering system. Another rather useful feature in the XEV 9e is the Auto Park system which can be operated not just while the driver is in the car, but also via the remote key with the driver outside in proximity. The unit works effortlessly and can park the big SUV automatically at an angle as well as a parallel park. This feature should come in handy for city dwellers and new buyers as the system has been calibrated with Indian scenarios in mind.

The coupe-like design is evident in profile.

Mahindra XEV 9e: How is it to drive?

The XEV 9e feels very different from the 6e thanks to its sheer size. The cabin feels large and visibility all around is good. But the same cannot be said for the rear as the sweeping roof line eats up the space. The XEV 9e offers good acceleration even in the lightest of modes. The SUV also feels light to steer in traffic and the small turning radius just adds to the effortless feel of driving. The ride quality at low speed too is excellent and so is the NVH packaging which ensures a silent cocoon for the occupants. The good bit about the XEV 9e is that it comes with a ‘Boost’ mode which momentarily unleashes all the power from the motor and that makes overtaking effortless.

At higher speeds though, the sheer weight and size of the vehicle is marginally felt. This is especially the case of the brake where one has to get used to the pedal feel which is not as progressive as what we would have liked. The semi-active dampers do a great job to curtail body roll around corners but it is not as confidence-inspiring as its smaller sibling, the 6e. On the upside, the XEV 9e is perhaps one of the best-handling SUVs in the segment.

The Mahindra XEV 9e is incredible value and a winner in our books.

Mahindra XEV 9e: Verdict

The XEV 9e is an impressive product even when compared to global competition. The SUV looks big and imposing and this means that on-road presence is just incredible. The interiors are well-made, and the space is excellent too. Mahindra has also loaded it with not just luxury features but also useful ones which makes driving easier. Finally, at Rs 21.90 lakh (ex-showroom) for the entry-level model, the XEV 9e in our books is a winner.
