A missing cat journeyed hundreds of miles to find its way back to its owner in California. Rayne Beau, a two-and-a-half-year-old Siamese cat, travelled over 1,600 kilometres after being lost for two months.

It all happened when Susanne and Benny Anguiano from California’s Salinas were enjoying their holiday at Fishing Bridge RV Park in Yellowstone National Park. On June 4, the cat got startled and bolted into the woods. The owners were left in despair. “My husband searched the woods every day for hours to find the cat,” Susanne told CNN affiliate KSBW.

Despite their attempts to lure it back with treats and toys, they had to leave without it. “That was the hardest day because I felt like I was letting it down,” Anguiano told CNN as he recalled the weight of that moment.

Not one to lose hope, Anguiano adopted another cat to keep Rayne Beau’s companion, Starr, company. The two had been rescued together when they were just 11 weeks old and their bond remained strong.

After 61 long days, the couple received thrilling news: a cat matching Rayne Beau’s microchip was found in Roseville, California, about 190 miles (305 kilometres approximately) away!

Taken to a local animal shelter, Rayne Beau was examined by staff. The shelter confirmed it was found in poor health but was on the mend.

The shelter doctor emphasised that people should use microchips for their pets and stressed their importance in reunions like this.

With the use of such microchips, a vet or animal control officer could verify the lost pets with their owner’s contact information.

Rayne Beau had travelled over 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometres approximately) from Wyoming to Roseville and then back to Salinas. While the owners are unsure how it managed such a long journey, they were simply overjoyed to it back home.
