In Short

  • Apple may split launches, saving standard iPhone 18 models for spring
  • Pro models are expected to keep familiar rear styling and sizes
  • Variable aperture and a stacked sensor could broaden photography control

New iPhone on your mind? Sounds like a good idea. But you may want to hold off for a few more months before making that final card swipe. Apple’s next-generation iPhone 18 Pro series is expected to arrive in September 2026, and early leaks suggest it could bring meaningful upgrades across battery life, performance, cameras, connectivity and AI features, even if the overall design remains familiar.

So, if having the latest iPhone is what you want, waiting could be worth it. But what’s actually coming? Well, we do not know for sure, as Apple typically keeps everything under wraps before launch. However, rumours and leaks have already started flooding the internet, giving us a sneak peek at what may be on the way.

What’s new for iPhone 18? Let’s take a look.

Two launch events?

Before we get into the upgrades, it is worth noting that the iPhone 18 is not expected to arrive this year. In fact one of the biggest changes rumoured for the next generation is Apple’s launch strategy. Report has it that Apple could split its next iPhone release cycle into two phases.

Under this plan, the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the long-rumoured foldable iPhone would debut in September 2026, while the standard iPhone 18, iPhone Air 2 and iPhone 18e could arrive in spring 2027. That means buyers upgrading during Apple’s traditional autumn launch window may only have premium models to choose from.

iPhone 18 Pro: Expected specs

Now, coming to what Apple’s next flagship smartphone may offer.

Design

In terms of design, Apple is not expected to make any radical changes. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are likely to retain the same overall look as the iPhone 17 Pro series, including the raised rear camera module and triple-camera arrangement.

There are also rumours that Apple could refresh the Pro lineup with a new set of colours. Leaks suggest the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max may be offered in Dark Cherry, Light Blue, Dark Gray and Silver finishes.

Among them, Dark Cherry is tipped to be the new signature colour for this generation, replacing the current Cosmic Orange option. The shade is said to feature a deep burgundy-inspired look, while Light Blue could bring back a Sierra Blue-like finish that remains popular among Apple fans. Dark Gray is also expected to make a return as a more traditional near-black option.

Display

Display sizes are expected to remain unchanged at 6.3 inches for the iPhone 18 Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max. Some reports also suggest Apple could refine the rear finish to create a more seamless appearance between the frame and the back panel.

Apple is also tipped to introduce a more power-efficient LTPO+ display technology, which could help improve battery life without increasing power consumption.

Smaller Dynamic island?

Meanwhile, there are whispers of some more changes for the display. While some reports suggest Apple is working on under-display Face ID technology, more recent leaks point towards a smaller Dynamic Island instead. Well-known leaker Ice Universe claims the cut-out could shrink by around 35 per cent compared with current models. Apple is reportedly testing different approaches, including moving some Face ID components under the display to free up additional screen space.

Interestingly, Apple's newly unveiled Siri AI has added fresh fuel to these rumours. On iPhones running the iOS 27 beta, Siri appears as an elongated oval that closely matches the shape of the current Dynamic Island. On the iPad and Mac, however, the assistant appears as a circular orb. The difference has led some observers to speculate that Apple may be preparing a smaller Dynamic Island for future iPhones, potentially allowing the iPhone version of Siri to adopt the same orb-like design seen on other Apple devices.

Battery

Battery life could be one of the headline upgrades. According to multiple leaks, the iPhone 18 Pro Max may feature a battery between 5,100mAh and 5,200mAh, slightly larger than the battery found in the current-generation model.

Chipset and performance

Performance upgrades are expected to come from Apple’s new A20 chip, which is said to be built on TSMC’s advanced 2nm process. Analysts believe the chip could deliver around 15 per cent faster performance and up to 30 per cent better efficiency compared to the A19 generation.

The Pro models are also expected to feature 12GB of RAM and launch with iOS 27, which Apple says will introduce a rebuilt Siri with more conversational responses, onscreen awareness and better understanding of personal context.

Connectivity

Connectivity could see notable upgrades as well. Apple is reportedly preparing its next-generation C2 modem for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. The modem is expected to improve speeds, enhance power efficiency and add mmWave 5G support in markets such as the United States.

Reports have also linked the devices to next-generation satellite connectivity that could eventually allow broader internet access through satellite networks, rather than limiting the feature to emergency messaging.

Camera

The cameras of iPhone 18 Pro could also receive some of the most significant upgrades. Apple is reportedly testing a variable aperture system for the main camera, allowing users to control how much light enters the lens. Such a feature would offer greater flexibility for portrait photography and low-light shooting.

Reports also suggest Apple may adopt a new three-layer stacked image sensor, which is said to improve responsiveness, reduce noise and deliver better dynamic range.

iPhone 18 Pro India price

Pricing remains one of the biggest mysteries and will be until the final launch. While Apple has hinted that rising component costs could eventually affect product pricing, some analysts believe the company may try to keep increases modest.

In India, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could remain close to the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s starting price of Rs 1,49,900, although a small price hike cannot be ruled out.

As always, Apple’s plans could change before launch. For now, the iPhone 18 Pro series appears set to focus on meaningful upgrades under the hood rather than a dramatic redesign. But if you are considering an expensive iPhone upgrade, waiting until September 2026 could be worth it to get the best of what Apple has to offer in its next-generation smartphones.
