  • Indians have created over 1 billion ChatGPT AI images
  • OpenAI says India is the biggest market for Images 2.0
  • Users are creating anime edits, posters and cinematic AI visuals

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has revealed that users in India have already created more than 1 billion images using ChatGPT Images 2.0 since its launch. Sharing a post on X recently, Altman wrote, “ChatGPT Images 2.0 loves India. Already more than 1 billion images created there; awesome to see”.

The milestone comes just weeks after OpenAI said in a press release that India has emerged as the biggest market for ChatGPT Images 2.0 users globally.

The company introduced ChatGPT Images 2.0 in April this year as an upgraded version of its earlier AI image generation system. At the time, OpenAI said the new model was designed to handle more complex image tasks and generate visuals that are more accurate and practically usable.

Indian users are using AI in chaotic and creative ways

But what Indian users are doing with the tool is going far beyond polished AI demonstrations.

According to OpenAI’s observations shared earlier this month, users in India are turning themselves into anime characters, fictional newspaper celebrities, tarot cards, cinematic heartbreak edits, paparazzi shots and fashion mood boards.

The trend reflects how internet users are mixing memes, aesthetics and social media culture with AI tools in highly creative ways.

Unlike older AI image generators that often produced visuals only vaguely related to what users actually wanted, OpenAI says the new model is significantly better at understanding prompts and aesthetics.

The company claims the new system is capable of producing images that users can genuinely use rather than just experiment with.

OpenAI says the new model is smarter and more accurate

One of the biggest upgrades in ChatGPT Images 2.0 is improved rendering of non-Latin languages, including Hindi and Bengali.

The company has also added what it calls “thinking capabilities” to the image model.

According to OpenAI, when a thinking model is selected in ChatGPT, the tool can search the web for real-time information, create multiple image variations from a single prompt and even double-check its own outputs before generating results.

This allows the system to deliver more accurate and visually consistent images.

OpenAI says ChatGPT Images 2.0 is its first image generation model with such reasoning-based capabilities, marking a major step forward for AI-generated visuals.
