- IIT student’s Rs 3 lakh internship and luxury hotel stay sparks online debate
- Viral post reignites discussion on IIT opportunities, salaries and tech careers
- Some praised the student’s success while others questioned India’s pay gap
A single social media post about an IIT student’s internship has exploded online, opening up conversations about salaries, privilege, India’s tech industry, and whether elite college tags still hold unmatched power in the job market.
The now-viral post by X user Kush Agarwal read: "22 year old cousin, IIT, got internship for 3 months in Bangalore. 3L per month, plus stay in a hotel."
That was enough to send the internet into a frenzy.
Some users were genuinely stunned by the numbers. Others were irritated. A few called it "very common" in top tech circles. And many simply wanted to know one thing: what company pays a 22-year-old intern Rs 3 lakh a month plus accommodation?
SOCIAL MEDIA DIVIDED OVER VIRAL IIT INTERNSHIP
The comments section quickly turned into a debate arena.
"Wow, 3L a month for an internship is wild," one user wrote.
Another commented, "Many people don’t earn this after years of experience."
Responding to the curiosity around the viral post, Kush Agarwal later hinted in the replies that the internship was with an American company founded by Indians and operating in the cybersecurity space.
While he did not officially reveal the company’s name, several users speculated it could be firms like Rubrik or Palo Alto Networks, both known for high-paying tech roles and internships.
But not everyone was impressed.
One viral reply argued that students learning AI tools independently are earning similar amounts without going through the IIT route. Another user sarcastically wrote: "22 and interning??"
The post also triggered conversations around India’s widening salary gap in the tech sector, where top-tier engineering graduates can land compensation packages that seem unreal to many working professionals.
WHY BENGALURU KEEPS ATTRACTING TOP TECH TALENT
Bengaluru remains India’s biggest technology hiring hub, home to global software giants, AI startups, cybersecurity firms, and high-growth unicorns.
Top companies often compete aggressively for engineering talent from IITs and other elite institutes, especially in fields like AI, machine learning, systems engineering, cybersecurity, and cloud computing.
In recent years, high-paying internships have become more common in niche tech roles, particularly for students with strong coding profiles, research experience, or competitive programming backgrounds.
Still, for many online users, the viral post became less about one student and more about the changing reality of jobs in India.
At a time when layoffs, hiring freezes, and salary cuts dominate headlines, a Rs 3 lakh monthly internship feels almost unreal to a large section of the internet.
