Ather teases first EL platform electric scooter ahead of August 29 debut

Ather Energy has teased its first EL platform-based electric scooter ahead of its August 29 debut, previewing a more affordable commuter-focused EV that will broaden the brand's presence in India's mass-market segment.

Ather Energy has offered the first official glimpse of its upcoming EL platform-based electric scooter ahead of its global debut at Ather Community Day on August 29, 2026. The teaser, shared by Ather Energy CEO Tarun Mehta, shows the production model on the assembly line and confirms that the Bengaluru-based EV maker is gearing up to enter the high-volume commuter scooter segment with an all-new product.

Expected to be priced between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.25 lakh (ex-showroom), the new scooter will become Ather's most affordable offering yet, slotting below the Rizta and the 450 range.

Production model stays close to EL01 concept

The assembly line image suggests that the production scooter has remained largely faithful to the EL01 concept showcased last year. It features a handlebar-mounted headlamp, a vertically styled front apron and a wide LED daytime running light (DRL), while its overall proportions closely resemble the design patent filed by Ather.

One of the biggest changes appears to be the adoption of metal body panels, replacing the polymer bodywork used on the company's current scooters. The new scooter also gets a long single-piece seat and a flat floorboard, indicating a stronger focus on practicality and everyday usability than Ather's sportier 450 lineup.

The teaser further reveals what appears to be a 14-inch front wheel paired with a smaller 12-inch rear wheel, although Ather is yet to confirm the final specifications.

Built on an all-new modular platform

The upcoming scooter is underpinned by Ather's new EL platform, which was first unveiled during Community Day 2025. According to the company, the architecture has been developed using more than 26 lakh kilometres of real-world riding data and has been engineered to support multiple scooter formats across different price points.

The platform can accommodate battery packs ranging from 2kWh to 5kWh and integrates a new silent gear-drive motor, an onboard charger and longer service intervals. Ather has previously stated that the EL architecture is intended to serve as the foundation for an entire family of electric scooters over the coming years.

A strategic shift towards mass-market buyers

Sharing the teaser on social media, Tarun Mehta hinted that Ather Community Day will feature "a bunch" of announcements beyond the new scooter, suggesting additional products or technology updates could also be unveiled.

The EL platform marks a significant shift in Ather's product strategy. While the company built its reputation with performance-oriented electric scooters, the new platform is aimed at addressing the needs of mainstream buyers by prioritising affordability, comfort, ease of ownership, charging convenience and lower running costs.

Positioned to expand Ather's market reach

The timing of the launch comes as Ather continues to strengthen its presence in the Indian EV market. The Rizta has already helped the company broaden its customer base beyond enthusiasts, and the new EL platform is expected to further accelerate volumes by targeting India's largest commuter scooter segment.

With an expected price tag below the Rizta, the upcoming scooter is likely to take on established rivals from Ola Electric, TVS, Bajaj, Hero Vida and Honda in the fiercely contested affordable electric scooter space.

All details, including pricing, battery options and full specifications, will be announced when Ather officially unveils the scooter at Ather Community Day on August 29, 2026.
