When Priyanka Chopra Jonas stepped onto the red carpet at the Gold House's 5th Annual Gold Gala in New York City, she didn't just make a style statement; she carried a piece of India with her. And the credit for that goes to Amit Aggarwal and his stunning custom Chikankari creation, crafted from a 20-year-old saree.
For the event, Chopra's look beautifully blended old-world craftsmanship with futuristic couture, making it nearly impossible to look away. The highlight of the ensemble undoubtedly was Chikankari, the delicate embroidery style from Lucknow, known for its intricate handwork and dreamy, almost translucent finish.
Since the actor hails from Uttar Pradesh, the craft carried a deeply personal connection to her roots, making the outfit feel even more meaningful.
But this wasn't just any Chikankari ensemble. Beyond the fact that the gown was created using a two-decade-old saree, what made it even more special was the craftsmanship behind it. Over the course of one and a half months, women artisans across generations came together to hand embroider the delicate textile. Every thread, motif, and detail carried the legacy of Indian craftsmanship and the stories of the women preserving it.
Of course, because it was an Amit Aggarwal creation, the outfit also featured his signature futuristic aesthetic. Sculptural corsetry, glass beadwork, rubber cord detailing, and architectural forms were layered onto the softness of Chikankari, creating a striking balance between delicacy and strength, something that felt incredibly Priyanka-coded.
The inspiration behind the look beautifully bridged heritage, biomimicry, and contemporary design. Drawing from the intricate geometry of Mughal jalis and blending it with parametric architecture, the design was rooted in the spiralling structure of the human DNA helix. The idea was to show how historical ornamentation and modern forms can emerge from the same natural intelligence found within life itself.
Talking about the outfit, Aggarwal shared that he wanted to reinterpret the beauty of Chikankari through a more contemporary and global lens while still honouring its roots.
"I felt compelled to translate that spirit into something tactile, where craft becomes language and textile becomes memory. Working with the artisans, every thread of Chikankari carried the weight of tradition, while every materiality and form integrated into a contemporary dialogue. For Priyanka, the translucency of the textile juxtaposed with the strength of structure embodies a dichotomy that exists within all of us, with softness and resilience coexisting simultaneously and ultimately creating a truly remarkable ensemble that reflects both her journey and spirit," said Aggarwal.
And that's exactly why the look worked so well. It wasn't loud or over-the-top. It was elegant, meaningful, and deeply rooted in craftsmanship while still feeling modern enough for a glamorous New York gala.
Safe to say, Chikankari had its main character moment. Don't you agree?
