In a fresh push to improve railway safety and passenger comfort, Indian Railways is introducing composite sleepers and AI-based track monitoring. The move focuses on modern railway infrastructure, smarter maintenance and better travel experience.
Announced after a key review meeting, the plan replaces older iron and concrete sleepers with lighter, stronger alternatives while also bringing in artificial intelligence tools to track rail conditions.
Together, these changes aim to make train journeys smoother, safer and more efficient, especially at sensitive sections like bridges and crossings.
COMPOSITE SLEEPERS TO CHANGE TRACK DESIGN
One of the biggest decisions is the use of composite sleepers in bridge approaches and at points and crossings.
These sleepers are lighter than traditional iron and concrete ones but can handle higher loads. They also offer better cushioning, making train movement smoother, especially over bridges and junctions.
Another advantage is flexibility. These sleepers can be customised based on location-specific needs, making them easier to install and repair.
They can withstand loads of up to 700 kg per square centimetre and are expected to last longer, reducing long-term maintenance costs for Indian Railways.
AI-BASED TRACK MONITORING COMES IN
Alongside physical upgrades, AI-based monitoring is being introduced to improve track surveillance.
Inspection vehicles will now be equipped with AI-enabled devices using Ground Penetration Radar. This technology checks the condition of the track base and helps detect hidden issues early.
This step is expected to reduce risks and allow faster response to potential problems before they affect train operations.
BETTER WELDING CHECKS WITH NEW TECH
To improve track durability, a new testing method, Magnetic Particle Testing, will be used.
This technique helps detect even small defects in welded joints, which are often difficult to spot but can impact safety over time.
