Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the new GT SUV, an electric performance SUV developed in-house on the company's AMG.EA high-performance architecture. The new model combines a full-size SUV body with sports car-inspired performance, featuring up to 1,169bhp, a claimed range of up to 700km and ultra-fast DC charging of up to 710kW.

The Mercedes-AMG GT SUV will be offered in three variants: GT 53, GT 55 and GT 63. Mercedes-AMG has not announced prices or availability for India.

Mercedes-AMG GT SUV: Design and features

The Mercedes-AMG GT SUV features a low roofline, wide track, muscular wheel arches and a steep front end. Its front fascia gets an AMG-specific radiator grille with vertical slats, while the headlamps feature star-shaped daytime running lights. The rear gets six circular tail-lights with a turbine-inspired design, along with an optional light strip.

Active aerodynamics include an AEROKINETICS Airpanel with vertical slats in the front bumper to regulate cooling airflow. The GT 55 and GT 63 also feature an active roof spoiler that adjusts its position according to speed and driving conditions to balance aerodynamic drag and stability.

Inside, the SUV gets a driver-focused cockpit with a 14-inch central multimedia touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster. A separate 14-inch display is available for the front passenger. Other features include a panoramic glass roof with switchable transparent and opaque modes, ambient lighting, optional AMG Performance seats and an optional Burmester 4D sound system.

The rear seat offers a three-seat bench, with foldable seatbacks and electrically folding headrests. Mercedes-AMG says the cabin has been designed to retain the practicality and comfort expected of a full-size SUV despite its sloping roofline.

The SUV also gets the latest MBUX system based on the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), integrating AI assistants from ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing and Google Gemini. Dedicated AMG applications include the AMG PERFORMANCE MENU, AMG SET-UP and AMG TRACK PACE, the latter offering telemetry, lap-time recording and other circuit-focused data.

Mercedes-AMG GT SUV: Performance and powertrain

The Mercedes-AMG GT SUV will be available with two electric powertrain configurations. The entry-level GT 53 uses two synchronous motors, one on each axle, producing a combined 544bhp and 800Nm. The GT 55 develops up to 816bhp and 1.860Nm, while the range-topping GT 63 produces up to 1,169bhp and 2,000Nm from three axial-flux motors.

The GT 55 and GT 63 feature three axial-flux motors, with two motors mounted at the rear and one at the front. The front motor acts as a booster, engaging when additional power or traction is required and disconnecting under lighter loads to reduce energy losses. The GT 53 also uses a disconnectable front motor, while its rear axle gets a two-speed transmission designed to balance acceleration and efficiency at higher speeds.

The range-topping GT 63 SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in 2.5 seconds and from 0 to 200kmph in 6.8 seconds. Its top speed is 270kmph when equipped with the optional Driver's Package.

Mercedes-AMG GT SUV: Battery and charging

The electric SUV gets an 800-volt battery system with directly cooled cylindrical cells. Mercedes-AMG will offer two battery options with usable capacities of 106kWh and 128kWh. The larger battery is claimed to deliver a WLTP range of up to 700km.

With the 106kWh battery, the SUV supports DC charging at up to 600kW and can add up to 380km of WLTP range in 10 minutes. The larger 128kWh battery supports charging at up to 710kW, adding up to 450km of claimed range in the same duration. Charging from 10 to 80 per cent takes as little as 12 minutes with the larger battery under suitable conditions.

At a 400kW charging station, the 106kWh and 128kWh battery versions take 14 minutes and 16 minutes, respectively, for the stated charging process. The battery uses a cooling system that circulates electrically non-conductive oil directly around individual cells to manage temperatures and maintain consistent performance under sustained loads.

Mercedes-AMG GT SUV: Suspension and driving technology

The GT SUV gets the newly developed AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL+ suspension, which uses active hydraulic elements to control body roll and pitch. The system replaces conventional stabiliser bars and works with adjustable air springs to balance ride comfort with handling precision. It is standard on the GT 63 and optional on the GT 55.

Active rear-axle steering is also standard across the range. At speeds below 80kmph, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels to improve manoeuvrability. At higher speeds, they turn in the same direction to improve stability.

The SUV also features AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, with variable torque distribution between the front and rear axles. The GT 55 and GT 63 additionally get torque vectoring to distribute power between the rear wheels.

For drivers seeking a more involving experience, the AMG RACE ENGINEER system allows adjustments to motor response, cornering behaviour and traction control. The GT 55 and GT 63 also get AMGFORCE Sport+, a driving programme that reproduces the sound of a V8 engine, while the GT 53 simulates the sound of an AMG six-cylinder engine. The system also incorporates simulated gear changes, steering-mounted paddles and seat shakers.
