Amazon Prime Video has launched an innovative feature called X-Ray Recaps to help viewers catch up on their favourite shows quickly and without spoilers. This new tool is aimed at users who may have missed part of an episode, taken a break between seasons, or simply want to refresh their memory without rewinding or searching online. X-Ray Recaps uses generative AI technology to provide brief, context-aware summaries that allow users to pick up the plot at any point without risk of spoiling future episodes.

The feature is personalised based on each viewer’s progress within a show. Whether they’re only a few minutes into an episode, midway through a season, or returning after a long break, X-Ray Recaps can provide a concise, spoiler-free recap of recent plot points, cliffhangers, and character developments. This service is an enhancement of Prime Video’s original X-Ray tool, which offers viewers insights into trivia, cast, production details, and more. Now, with X-Ray Recaps, the experience includes customised recaps tailored to keep viewers engaged without disrupting their viewing.

Adam Gray, Prime Video’s vice president of product, explained the motivation behind this feature. “With X-Ray Recaps, we’re directly addressing a common issue streaming customers face when they forget where they left off,” Gray said. “The feature is designed to provide memorable plot points and help viewers jump back into the story they love.”

X-Ray Recaps operates through Amazon Bedrock, a generative AI service powered by Amazon SageMaker technology. Using these AI tools, the system analyses video content, dialogues, and subtitles to create spoiler-free summaries of key scenes, events, and conversations. Built-in safeguards ensure that only relevant details are shown, without revealing upcoming twists or outcomes.

Viewers can access X-Ray Recaps through the Prime Video detail page or directly during playback within the X-Ray experience. The feature allows them to select from summaries of the current episode, the season so far, or the previous season. This flexibility gives viewers control over how much they wish to review.

Currently, X-Ray Recaps is available in beta for Fire TV users in the U.S., with support for additional devices expected by year’s end. At launch, the feature will be accessible on popular Amazon MGM Studios Originals, including Daisy Jones and the Six, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Wheel of Time, and The Boys, offering a streamlined experience for viewers eager to jump back into these beloved series.
