There are many ways to attain performance. But what is performance in its truest sense? Ridiculous numbers? Bone-shattering G-forces? Or is it something that can be felt, in one’s soul – something that can attainable and be made accessible to all? This is the idea that was forged by Volkswagen fifty years ago, and took shape in the form of the Golf GTI – a practical car that possessed a sporty soul, one that changed how performance cars were perceived.

It became the embodiment of performance, and if Volkswagen or the world had any doubts about the formula – they were shattered – the planned 5,000 units went on to become a production run of almost a hundred times that number, that is how well received it was. The way Volkswagen gave the people performance in a distilled formula, something that was considered an elite luxury changed the way enthusiast’s looked at cars. The Golf GTI became the benchmark, fast, accurate, and most importantly – fun. It proved that one didn’t need a supercar budget, to tap into the supercar soul.

The world evolved and so did the GTI, generation after generation, each iteration of the Golf GTI proved what attainable performance meant, bringing us to the current Mk8.5 Golf GTI, the modern benchmark. And while it has evolved into a car that can fit many roles, the GTI remembers its prime directive all too well – front wheel drive, punchy turbo petrol, a stiff chassis and a steering that talks to the driver. It doesn’t need to show off its numbers to stake its claim as a true enthusiast car, it does that by pulling on the heartstrings of those who live by the redline and the limits of grips.

Each generation of the GTI has democratised performance, providing the masses with a unique concoction, and it continues to do so. The 2.0 TSI under the hood is a masterpiece, capable of unrivaled ferocity and great refinement, it pushes out loads of power, launching the GTI to 100kmph in 5.9 seconds, with a proper shove. The brutal acceleration is accompanied by properly sonorous exhaust that ensures that even if people don’t see you as you blast past, they will definitely hear you.

IF Golf GTI didn't exist, neither would the Virtus GT, that is how important the genes are

And it is not like Volkswagen used up all of their magic with the Golf GTI, it is truly special, but what happens when one distills the GTI formula. A front wheel drive, powerful, and precise tool is born, in the form of the Virtus GT. And one can argue that the GTI isn’t equal to GT, but if the GTI didn’t exist, neither would the GT, that is just how important the genes are.

Trickled down to the Virtus GT, it announces its intent very clearly – the blacked out alloys, the smoke-effect taillamps, the GT-badging, with the ever-present Volkswagen design DNA mean that not only does the Virtus go fast, it looks fast standing still. Under the hood lies the 1.5 TSI, an engine that beats the same rhythm as the motor in the Golf GTI – it packs a powerful punch, and it loves the redline, and just like its sibling, it does the daily grind just as well, even shutting down two cylinders to maximise efficiency whenever it is used for for one of the more civil tasks.

The taut chassis, coupled with a steering that lets experts extract milliseconds at a track, while ensuring that beginners don’t feel intimidated – the Virtus GT was designed for this very purpose – to be the torchbearer of the GTI, and it doesn’t just match up on paper, it earned the GT badge, and it wears it like a medal. It doesn’t shout ferocity, but the way it can stick to a corner tells a very different story, the Virtus is a car that punches way above its weight when it comes to performance – just like the GTI.

Since it’s a Golf GTI, the cabin gets special touches too. Signature tartan seats, a red-and-black theme, and GTI badging on the steering wheel, constantly reminding you that this hatchback is built for enthusiasts.

The Golf GTI looks like nothing else on sale in India, it has true hatchback proportions – and the illuminated Volkswagen logo along with the red accents add to the performance aura of the GTI. It’s not just the exterior, the interior too is special, the seats come with a tartan pattern, and you get red and black themes along with a ‘GTI’ placed on the steering, so you know exactly what you’re driving when you’re punching through a corner.

Inspired by the Golf GTI, the Virtus GT gets a driver-focused cabin, supportive seats, precise steering, and a sporty red-and-black interior that adds to its GT character.

The Virtus GT takes a page from the GTI’s book, the cabin is angled towards the driver, the steering designed for precise inputs, the seats meant to keep the occupants in place, and if that wasn’t enough, the red and black contrasting theme give it the extra spice that comes with the GT badge, because there is no point being fast without looking cool.

The Golf and the Virtus are testaments to what the coveted GT badge represents

Both the Golf and the Virtus are testaments to what the coveted GTI badge represents – attainable performance in a package that is practical and built on pillars that have stood the test of time. The GTI badge carries a lot of heft, it means that the car that is adorned with it is one that brings power to the people, without compromising on practicality, one can take it to a track day, and grocery shopping after, that is what the GTI always stood for. And if there were ever an heir to the GTI lineage, a true distillation of what the icon has represented for the last five decades, the Virtus GT is the answer, engineered for true passion, without letting go of comfort.

The Virtus GT and the Golf GTI represent a different breed, of forced-induction performance that delivers fun for all.
