Meet Chirantan Desai, MangoDB CEO poached by Mark Zuckerberg to build Meta AI business

Mark Zuckerberg has picked Indian-origin tech CEO CJ Desai to lead Meta's new enterprise AI business. Under Desai, Meta hopes to turn its AI technology into products that businesses will pay for, while competing with players like OpenAI, Google and Microsoft.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has opened a new business vertical called Meta Enterprise Platform, focused on enterprise AI. To lead this new business, he has appointed — or rather poached — Chirantan “CJ” Desai as its Chief Enterprise Platform Officer. Desai, who became MangoDB CEO just 11 months ago, is leaving that company with immediate effect. At Meta, he will report directly to Zuckerberg.

Zuckerberg has described Meta Enterprise Platform as “the next major pillar” of the company’s business. The new unit hopes to offer businesses AI tools.

Desai, whose departure from MangoDB resulted in a sharp stock slide of the company on Monday, seemed excited about joining Zuckerberg. “I am very excited to share that I’m joining Meta as Chief Enterprise Platform Officer to lead Meta’s enterprise efforts reporting to Mark Zuckerberg,” he wrote in his LinkedIn post.

Interestingly, this is the second big Zuckerberg hiring that has Indian links. Recently, he also hired Kunal Shah to lead WhatsApp. So, who is CJ Desai, and why has Zuckerberg chosen him to lead Meta’s next big business venture?

CJ Desai and his connection to India

Desai is a veteran technology executive in Silicon Valley with more than three decades of experience in enterprise software, cloud computing, cybersecurity, databases and product development. Over the years, he has held leadership positions at some of the biggest names in enterprise technology, including Oracle, Symantec, EMC, ServiceNow, Cloudflare and MongoDB.

His career has largely focused on building technology products and scaling businesses that serve large organisations. That experience could come in handy at Meta, where Zuckerberg is now looking to take the company’s AI technology beyond its existing products and turn it into tools that businesses and developers can use.

But before making his mark in Silicon Valley, Desai’s roots trace back to India. Desai was born in India and grew up in Bengaluru before moving to the United States with his family in 1993 to pursue higher education.

He enrolled at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he earned a master’s degree in computer science and an MBA in 1995. However, financing his education was not always easy. Desai has often spoken about the financial challenges he faced as a student and credited a research assistantship with helping him pay for his studies.

CJ Desai professional journey

After completing MBA, Desai’s professional journey began at Oracle in 1995. He spent more than seven years at the company, working across enterprise software and cloud services. During his time there, he also helped build and run offshore businesses in Bengaluru, giving him an early connection to India’s technology industry.

Desai later moved into leadership roles at Symantec and EMC. He joined Symantec in 2004 and became its executive vice president of Information Management Group in 2012. In 2013, he joined EMC, where he led the Emerging Technology Products Division before taking charge of its broader Emerging Technologies Division.

From ServiceNow to Cloudflare and MongoDB

One of the most significant chapters of Desai’s leadership career began in 2016, when he joined ServiceNow as chief product and engineering officer. He spent nearly eight years at the company, taking on increasingly senior responsibilities before becoming president and chief operating officer.

In October 2024, Desai moved to Cloudflare as president of product and engineering. About a year later, in November 2025, he joined MongoDB as president and CEO, succeeding Dev Ittycheria, another Indian-origin technology executive. Interestingly, Ittycheria is now returning as MongoDB’s interim president and CEO following Desai’s departure for Meta.

At Meta, it seems Desai’s immediate challenge will be to turn the company’s AI capabilities into products that businesses and developers can use. “AI will reshape how organisations innovate, grow, serve customers and run their operations,” he wrote in his post on LinkedIn. He added that Meta’s enterprise products would have security and privacy built in from the outset, with the goal of “making Meta the place enterprises come to scale their businesses”.

However, leading Meta’s new enterprise business also means stepping into a highly competitive market. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft and Amazon are all developing AI tools and platforms for businesses.
