A family trip to Madinah for the Umrah pilgrimage turned tragic for a Hyderabad-based IT professional and his family after a projectile struck Saudi Arabia’s King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on October 10.

Mohammed Yousuf, 46, died from his injuries, while his wife and their three children were injured and are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Riyadh.

Yousuf, a resident of Mehdipatnam in Hyderabad, was at the airport with his family to travel to Madinah when the incident occurred. The family was waiting near a check-in kiosk at around 3 pm local time when the projectile struck the airport premises.

Yousuf sustained serious injuries and later died. His wife, two sons and daughter were also injured. All four are receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU), with one of his sons reportedly in critical condition.

The attack has left the family facing a medical emergency alongside the loss of Yousuf, who had been travelling with them for the religious pilgrimage.

The family’s plans to reach Madinah were interrupted at the airport, where they had been waiting to begin the next leg of their journey.

INDIAN EMBASSY ASSURES ASSISTANCE

India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed grief over Yousuf’s death and offered condolences to the family.

“Deeply grieved at the loss of life of an Indian national in the Riyadh attack. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. The Embassy will extend all possible assistance,” Jaishankar said in a post on X.

The Embassy of India in Saudi Arabia also confirmed that an Indian national injured in the attack had died. It said officials were in contact with the family and would provide support to facilitate the early repatriation of Yousuf’s mortal remains.

The embassy conveyed its condolences to the family and reiterated its commitment to providing assistance.
