- Apple’s first OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro could launch around October 27
- The laptop is expected to feature an OLED display
- Apple could replace the notch with a Dynamic Island
October seems to be a busy month for Apple with a two-event line-up. One of which took place yesterday, when the tech giant unveiled its smart home line-up. Another one is reportedly in the pipeline, slated for October 27. Where the star of the show is expected to be the first MacBook Pro with an OLED touchscreen.
That would be a first for the Mac, which has stayed away from touch for decades. But the MacBook Pro may not be alone. Bloomberg says the event could also bring a new iPad mini with an OLED display, a 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M6 chip and an iMac with the M6 chip.
What we know about OLED MacBook Pro
Talking about the purported OLED MacBook Pro, some reports suggest it could be called MacBook Ultra. And one of the major focuses of building this laptop is its upgraded screen. The new MacBook Pro is expected to swap the current mini-LED panel for OLED, where each pixel switches off on its own. That usually means deeper blacks, richer colours and better contrast, which is good news for video editors and photographers. One trade-off is that OLED can sometimes fall short of mini-LED on peak brightness.
Another big highlight is the touchscreen, marking a bigger shift in the feature. You will reportedly be able to tap and swipe on the Mac’s screen, much like on an iPad. Apple is said to see touch as an add-on, not a replacement, so the keyboard and trackpad stay central. To keep the screen from wobbling when you tap it, Apple is rumoured to be adding a reinforced hinge. Hints of this are already in macOS Golden Gate, which has direct touch input in Sidecar and an iPhone-style pull-to-refresh option in apps like Safari and Mail.
In terms of design, the notch is expected to go, replaced by the Dynamic Island familiar from the iPhone. This could help Siri AI behave more consistently across iPhone and Mac. The laptop is also expected to be lighter than today’s models. It is said to come in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, the first redesign since the M1 Pro and M1 Max models in 2021.
Moving on to chips, Apple is reportedly not making M6 Pro or M6 Max chips. MacRumors says the new laptop will use the M5 Pro and M5 Max, so Apple doesn’t have to wait for the M7 series. A second-generation model with M7 Pro and M7 Max is tipped for late 2027 or early 2028.
Lastly, the price. It is expected to be a premium. Apple raised Mac prices in June, and the 14-inch M5 Pro MacBook Pro now starts at Rs 239900, while the 16-inch starts at Rs 359900. The OLED model is expected to cost more than that. However, the exact price remains a factor that we don’t know yet.
