- TCS will provide Claude AI access to 50,000 employees across key functions
- The announcement follows TCS' plan to have nearly 5 lakh AI agents within three years
- Chairman N Chandrasekaran says future hiring will slow as AI takes on a bigger role
TCS has announced a new partnership with Anthropic, the company behind AI assistant Claude. The latest move offers a clearer picture of how the Indian IT giant plans to bring AI deeper into its business. Under the deal, TCS will provide enterprise-wide access to Claude to 50,000 employees working across engineering, finance, legal, marketing and sales teams. The company will also set up a dedicated business unit to develop AI solutions and services using Anthropic's technology.
The announcement comes at an interesting time. Just days ago, TCS Chairman N Chandrasekaran said the company will have as many AI agents as human employees within the next three years. He also acknowledged that TCS is unlikely to hire people in the same numbers as it did in the past, as AI becomes a larger part of its operations.
While TCS' prediction of having nearly five lakh AI agents grabbed headlines, the company's latest move shows how that transition may actually begin. Before businesses can deploy large numbers of AI systems, employees need to learn how to work alongside them. Giving Claude access to 50,000 employees appears to be one of the first large-scale steps in that direction. TCS said the internal deployment will help its workforce gain hands-on experience with AI while also helping the company better support customers looking to adopt the technology.
"Enterprise AI value comes from understanding business context, orchestrating complex systems, and applying deep AI engineering talent," TCS CEO and MD K Krithivasan said while announcing the partnership.
Hiring may slow, but AI skills will matter more
The partnership also suggests a change taking place across the technology industry. As companies invest heavily in AI, many are rethinking how work gets done and what skills employees will need in the future. During the company's AGM, Chandrasekaran said TCS will not hire at the scale it once did, although he added that new opportunities will emerge as AI creates different kinds of roles. He stressed that workers will need stronger AI capabilities to remain fully employable in the years ahead.
"The company has half a million employees. The day is not far when the company will have half a million AI agents. Will it definitely lead to decrease in hiring? Absolutely. The company will not be hiring the kind of numbers it used to hire," he said.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said the partnership will bring Claude to enterprises and professionals across India and globally, including 50,000 TCS employees.
Beyond internal use, TCS and Anthropic plan to jointly develop AI offerings for industries such as banking, healthcare, telecom, aviation and public services. While there is not much information on this, the more immediate takeaway is what the deal says about TCS itself. After talking about a future filled with AI agents, the company is now putting one of the world's leading AI assistants directly into the hands of thousands of employees, offering an early glimpse of what that future could look like with AI.
