The University of Calcutta has revised examination rules for undergraduate programmes. The updated regulations cover attendance marks, internal assessment, passing criteria and grading for students enrolled in three-year and four-year undergraduate courses.

According to the official notifications, the university has specified the distribution of marks across different assessment components and outlined the criteria students must meet to pass their semester examinations.

ATTENDANCE MARKS LINKED TO CLASS PARTICIPATION

Under the revised examination system, students can earn up to five marks for attendance in each paper per semester. The marks will be awarded according to the prescribed attendance percentages, making regular class attendance an important component of academic assessment.

Students with attendance between 90 percent and 100 percent can receive five marks, while those attending 80 percent to below 90 percent of classes can earn four marks. Attendance between 75 percent and below 80 percent carries three marks, while students in the 60 percent to below 75 percent bracket can receive two marks.

The notification also contains provisions for students with attendance below 60 percent. Students should consult the official document and confirm the applicable rules with their respective colleges.

INTERNAL ASSESSMENT AND PASSING RULES REVISED

The university has also revised provisions relating to internal assessment and the distribution of marks in undergraduate examinations. Under the prescribed theory-paper structure, the semester-end examination carries 50 marks, internal assessment accounts for 20 marks, and attendance carries up to five marks, taking the total to 75 marks for the theory component.

Students must meet the prescribed minimum passing requirements to clear their examinations. The revised rules specify that candidates must secure at least 30 per cent overall in a paper, along with a minimum of 30 percent separately in the semester-end theory examination and the practical or tutorial examination, wherever applicable.

These provisions make it important for students to understand the assessment structure for their respective courses and prepare for both internal evaluations and semester-end examinations.

UNIVERSITY UPDATES GRADE-POINT CALCULATION

The revised regulations also specify changes to grade-point calculation. Under the updated grading table, students scoring between 90 per cent and 100 per cent receive 10 grade points, while those securing 80 per cent to below 90 per cent receive nine points.

Scores between 70 per cent and below 80 per cent carry eight grade points, while 60 per cent to below 70 per cent carries seven points. Students scoring between 50 per cent and below 60 per cent receive six points, and those securing 40 per cent to below 50 per cent receive five points. Scores between 30 per cent and below 40 per cent carry four grade points, while marks below 30 per cent are treated as a fail, with zero grade points.

The changes are intended to provide an updated framework for evaluating undergraduate students' academic performance. Students should check the applicable grading provisions in the notification relevant to their programme.

WHERE TO CHECK THE OFFICIAL NOTIFICATION

The revised rules cover both three-year and four-year undergraduate programmes at the University of Calcutta. Students should read the notification applicable to their course to understand the changes and their implications for upcoming semester examinations.

The official document is available on the university's website at caluniv.ac.in.

Students are advised to review the complete notification and contact their respective colleges if they require clarification about attendance marks, internal assessment, passing requirements or grade-point calculation.

With the revised examination framework coming into effect for the 2026-27 academic session, students should familiarise themselves with the updated rules and follow further instructions issued by the university and their colleges.
