AI is getting smarter by the day, and if Elon Musk is to be believed, the technology is on track to surpass the intelligence of all humans combined within the next four to five years. Musk's bold prediction came in response to a post on X by entrepreneur Peter H. Diamandis, who suggested that humanity's future abundance will be driven not just by more computing power and energy, but also by more people having access to the tools and resources needed to innovate and solve problems.
"Abundance isn't just more compute and more energy. It's more minds. More people free to invent, create and solve. The ceiling on human genius has always been the size of the human population and their access to tools and resources. As humanity moves into space, we shatter all limitations," Diamandis wrote on X.
Responding to the post, the Tesla and xAI chief wrote, "AI probably exceeds the sum of all human intelligence in 4 or 5 years." Musk's comment builds on Diamandis's argument that human progress is driven by having more minds, better tools and greater access to resources. While Diamandis highlighted the power of expanding human potential, Musk pointed to AI as the next major leap, suggesting that artificial intelligence could soon surpass the collective intellectual capacity of humanity itself.
And this is not the first time Musk has given this close timeline for the arrival of smarter AI. Musk has often argued that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) could arrive as early as 2026 and that digital intelligence may surpass the combined intelligence of all humans by the end of the decade.
While Musk believes a single AI model could outsmart any individual human within the next year or so– 2027, he sees 2030 as the point when true artificial superintelligence (ASI) begins to emerge. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, he said, "By 2030 or 2031, AI could be smarter than all of humanity combined." He added that technological development is moving faster than many policymakers realise.
Meanwhile, Musk's latest statement comes at a time when AI systems are advancing rapidly. Models developed by companies such as OpenAI, Google, Meta, Anthropic and xAI are already capable of writing code, generating content, conducting research and solving increasingly complex problems. At the same time, companies are pouring billions of dollars into data centres, AI chips and computing infrastructure as the race to build more powerful AI models intensifies.
For Musk, abundance is closely tied to automation. He believes AI-powered machines could eventually handle much of the work currently performed by humans, including manufacturing, logistics, construction and other labour-intensive industries. If that happens, goods and services could become significantly cheaper and more widely available.
That vision is also reflected in Tesla's Optimus humanoid robot programme. Musk has repeatedly argued that Optimus could eventually become more important to Tesla's future than its electric vehicles. The robot is being designed to perform repetitive, dangerous and physically demanding tasks in factories, warehouses and potentially even homes. In fact according to Musk the real transformation will be brought by humanoids and suggested that the AI powered robots will bring l"amazing abundance for all".
