In Short

  • PM Modi gifted Italian PM Meloni a packet of Melody toffees in Italy.
  • Social media quickly turned the moment into the 'Melodi' meme trend.
  • Meloni's thank you video gained nearly two million views on X.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent social media into overdrive after gifting Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni a packet of India’s beloved Melody toffees during their meeting in Italy, single-handedly reviving the internet’s favourite geopolitical fandom: “Melodi,” an expression that is used online for the two leaders.

So, yes. That happened. Melody. To Meloni. And no prizes for guessing that this sweet moment was not on the internet’s 2026 bingo card. ‘Melody,’ ‘Meloni’ and ‘Melodi’ went straight up the trends list on X as social media users posted memes that represented emotions from that of delight to disbelief.

Within seconds, X turned into a full-blown fan convention as users screamed about the return of the “Melodi universe”, the internet’s long-running obsession with Modi and Meloni’s surprisingly meme-friendly public interactions.

For months now, social media users have referred to the duo as “Melodi”, turning every handshake, selfie and interaction between the two leaders into rom-com content. But this time, the meme practically became self-aware.

A few examples of ecstatic reactions are comments such as “This man just gifted Meloni Melody. The internet can retire now” and “PM Modi understands meme culture better than most brands.”

Users flooded X with reactions ranging from “hard launch confirmed” to “the Melodi cinematic universe just got an official sequel.” Others joked that no geopolitical analyst could have predicted that an Indian toffee brand would become part of international diplomacy.

Of course, Meloni’s “Thank you for the gift” video where PM Modi gifted her Melody toffees has blown up on X with close to two million views within an hour of being made available online.

The funniest part? The actual meeting was extremely serious.

PM Modi is currently in Italy for the final leg of his five-nation tour and is expected to hold detailed bilateral talks with Giorgia Meloni on trade, defence, connectivity and strategic cooperation. The two leaders also visited the iconic Colosseum ahead of formal discussions.

But unfortunately, for global diplomacy, absolutely nobody online is interested in any of this at this moment. Because the internet saw one toffee packet and collectively decided: this is cinema.
