Not the course or professors: Student explains what makes IIT special

What makes IITs stand out beyond academics? A student's reflections on a friend's experience at IIT Guwahati have sparked debate online, with many pointing to alumni networks, mentorship, peer communities, and career-building opportunities as the institution's biggest strengths.

  • IITs valued more for network than academics
  • Seniors and alumni actively mentor students
  • Peer group boosts skills beyond studies

For years, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have been regarded as the pinnacle of higher education in India. While many attribute their reputation to rigorous academics, distinguished faculty, and competitive curricula, a recent observation by 19-year-old Anurag Jha suggests that the true strength of IITs may lie elsewhere: their community and network.

Sharing his thoughts on X, Jha recalled a conversation with a friend studying at IIT Guwahati. According to him, his friend described a culture where seniors and alumni remain actively involved in students' growth, offering guidance both online and offline.

"My friend, who is in IIT Guwahati, told me that in the IIT culture, seniors and even alumni who are doing well in life meet students online and offline, offering mentorship, recommending resources and roadmaps, and even referring them to good startups," Jha wrote.

The conversation led him to rethink what makes IITs stand out from other institutions.

Reflecting on the discussion, Jha said he came to understand that the real value of an IIT lies less in its curriculum and faculty and more in its powerful network and supportive community.

Jha's reflection highlights the often-overlooked advantage of elite institutions: access to a powerful ecosystem of mentors, peers, and alumni who help students navigate careers and personal growth beyond the classroom.

MORE THAN ACADEMICS

He also pointed to the remarkable transformation of his friend since their school days. Back then, he remembered him as a quiet, academically inclined student with a very small social circle. Today, however, he has developed skills far beyond academics.

"He was just a nerd in school, but now he's so good at communication, programming, DSA, development, and sports that it amazes me. Is this really the same guy who used to play Bingo with me and had only two friends?" Jha wrote.

For Jha, this change reflects the impact of being immersed in an environment filled with ambitious peers, supportive seniors, and successful alumni. His experience suggests that the IIT advantage may not simply be what students learn in classrooms, but the people they learn from and grow alongside.

SOCIAL MEDIA AGREES: IT’S THE NETWORK THAT MATTERS

Jha's post sparked a discussion among social media users about what truly sets IITs apart.

Many pointed to the strength of their alumni networks and mentorship culture, while others emphasised the role of a highly motivated peer group in driving personal and professional growth.

While academics remain a key part of the IIT experience, many believe the institution’s real strength lies in its ecosystem, a powerful combination of peers, mentors, alumni and opportunities.

As Jha’s viral post suggests, what makes IIT special may not just be what students learn in class, but the network that helps shape who they become.
