The California State Assembly has adopted a resolution recognising November 8 as Diwali Day and urging people across the state to join the celebration. The measure was adopted on Thursday.
The resolution, moved by assembly members Darshana Patel and Ash Kalra, also expressed "deepest respect" for Indian Americans and the Indian diaspora in California and around the world on the occasion. It said the Assembly "recognizes this year's Diwali festival on Sunday, November 8, 2026, and encourages Californians to take part in this joyous day of celebration".
The resolution said Diwali holds great significance for Indian Americans and South Asian Americans, and is celebrated every year by Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains across the United States and around the world. It described Diwali, or Deepavali, meaning "a row of lamps", as one of the world's oldest holidays that brings families, friends and communities together in a celebration of generosity, unity, joy, appreciation and reflection.
It added, "Diwali, commonly referred to as the Festival of Lights, is a time when homes are brightened with candles, oil lanterns, and clay lamps and the skies are filled with firecrackers to show respect for good health, wealth, knowledge, peace, and prosperity."
The resolution said Diwali is observed in many different ways, reflecting the triumph of good over evil and linking to themes such as freedom from negativity, the strength to overcome struggles, embracing positivity and humility, and upholding kindness despite personal challenges. "For those who celebrate, Diwali is a time to commit to knowledge, growth, and happiness; it is a time to reflect, signifying the importance of wisdom, kindness, and transformation," it said.
With the resolution, the California State Assembly formally recognised this year's Diwali on November 8 and encouraged wider participation, while highlighting the festival's importance to Indian Americans, South Asian Americans and communities that celebrate it across the world.
