It's hot, humid, and most of us are craving something cold and comforting. Which makes this the perfect time to talk about frozen desserts.

Around the world, different cultures have their own sweet indulgences, from gelato and ice cream to frozen custard and other creamy delights. International food guide TasteAtlas has recently released its 50 Best Frozen Desserts list, and India has made it to the top 10.

India's iconic dessert goes global

This one needs no introduction. It's creamy, it's cold, it's comforting, and it has been part of childhood memories for many. Yes, it's the classic Kulfi! And this desi dessert has secured the seventh spot on the global list.

Before artisanal desserts became popular, Kulfi was already serving happiness at family weddings, accompanying late-night walks and creating countless sweet memories.

There's nothing fancy about it. Just simple goodness. Traditionally, to make this, milk is simmered for hours until it thickens and becomes dense. It is then sweetened and garnished with ingredients like pistachios, nuts, saffron and more.

Today, Kulfi comes in a wide range of flavours. While falooda, rabri and kesar-pista remain timeless classics, the dessert has also embraced newer variations, including chocolate, mango, berries and more.

And for the love of flavours, the list also featured another version of it. Kulfi falooda was ranked at the 33rd position. In fact, the extended list of the 100 Best Frozen Desserts, updated in June 2026, also placed Matka kulfi at the 74th spot.

One dessert and its different versions, all featured on a global list? Now, that's something.

Kulfi has been part of global frozen dessert conversations before as well. Last year, it secured the 49th position in TasteAtlas' list of the 100 Best Frozen Desserts.

Meanwhile, the ranking spans continents and culinary history, with England's Clotted cream ice cream claiming the top spot. Italy's Gelato al pistacchio, one of the country's most beloved gelato flavours, secured second place. It was followed by Dondurma, the famous Turkish ice cream known for its dense and chewy texture. Frozen custard from the United States took fourth place, while Peru's Cremolada - a refreshing cross between a milkshake and shaved ice dessert - rounded out the top five.
