Tata Nexon to be sold as Osprey in South Africa, launch confirmed for Q3 2026

Tata Motors will introduce the Nexon in South Africa with a new identity as the company continues to expand its passenger vehicle presence in the market.

Tata Motors has announced that the Nexon will make its South African debut under a new name, Tata Osprey. The compact SUV is scheduled to arrive in the country during the third quarter of 2026, becoming the fifth passenger vehicle in the brand's South African portfolio.

The Osprey will join the Tiago, Punch, Curvv and Harrier, further strengthening Tata Motors' lineup after the company's return to the South African market in 2025.

According to Tata Motors, the new name draws inspiration from the osprey, a bird of prey commonly found across parts of South Africa. The automaker says the name reflects the SUV's capability, versatility and adventurous character while also giving the model a stronger local identity.

Although the name has changed, the Osprey will essentially be the South African version of the Nexon sold in India. Tata highlighted the SUV's global success, noting that the Nexon has crossed the one-million-customer milestone and has been among India's best-selling passenger vehicles in recent years.

Safety is expected to remain one of the SUV's key strengths. Tata confirmed that the Osprey will carry a five-star NCAP safety rating, mirroring the credentials of the India-spec Nexon, which earned a five-star Global NCAP rating and later secured a five-star Bharat NCAP score.

"South African customers increasingly demand vehicles that combine contemporary styling, technology, practicality and safety along with excellent value for money, and the Tata Osprey delivers on all fronts," said Jeff Allison, General Manager – Marketing and Product, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles South Africa.

Tata Motors has not yet disclosed the powertrain options for the South African-spec Osprey. In India, the Nexon is offered with a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 120bhp and a 1.5-litre diesel engine developing 115bhp. Transmission choices include five-speed and six-speed manual gearboxes, a five-speed AMT and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic, depending on the variant. The company has also not confirmed whether the all-electric Nexon EV will be introduced in South Africa at a later stage.

The feature list is also expected to closely mirror the Indian model. Depending on the variant, the Osprey could offer dual 10.25-inch displays, automatic climate control, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, a panoramic sunroof, a JBL sound system and an advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) suite.

The announcement comes as Tata Motors continues to grow its international footprint. The company has been expanding exports and strengthening its presence in overseas markets, with South Africa emerging as one of its focus regions. The launch of the Osprey is expected to play a key role in broadening Tata's appeal in the country's competitive compact SUV segment.
