Now, ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode is here for macOS and desktop users, so you can chat with the AI by simply speaking – no typing needed! Previously available only on mobile for Plus and Teams users, this new feature lets you give voice instructions and hear ChatGPT respond in a natural, almost human tone. It even understands different accents better than before, making interactions smoother and faster. To access Advanced Voice on desktop, you will be required to download the latest version of the app.
What Is Advanced Voice Mode?
Advanced Voice Mode is more than just voice recognition – it offers an upgraded voice interaction that sounds natural and can convey emotions, modulate tone, and even emphasize certain words for a more lifelike feel. OpenAI has introduced five new voices for ChatGPT: Arbor, Maple, Sol, Spruce, and Vale, joining the previous voices Breeze, Juniper, Cove, and Ember. These new options aim to create an engaging, more natural dialogue, adding to the growing list of voice profiles that make AI conversations feel increasingly personal. The voice options are inspired by nature, reflecting OpenAI’s intent to make interactions feel smooth, comfortable, and familiar.
To use Advanced Voice Mode on the desktop, users simply need to enable the voice feature within the ChatGPT app. Once activated, users can communicate with ChatGPT through voice input, which the AI responds to verbally. Advanced Voice Mode also comes with visual updates, replacing the static black dots used during voice interactions with a dynamic blue sphere that responds in real-time, making interactions visually more interactive.
This new voice capability is part of a broader suite of customization options. Users can personalize ChatGPT’s responses with "Custom Instructions," setting preferences that align with their style or needs. Additionally, the Memory feature allows ChatGPT to remember user interactions across sessions, making responses feel more tailored over time, as the AI recalls previous conversations to improve relevance.
Advanced Voice Mode has also improved its ability to recognise diverse accents, helping to reduce misunderstandings and deliver quicker, smoother responses. However, it’s worth noting that the highly discussed "Sky" voice—once critiqued for sounding like Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson—is absent from this release following a lawsuit. Additionally, OpenAI’s planned video and screen-sharing features, which allow ChatGPT to process visual and audio input concurrently, are yet to be included.
In summary, Advanced Voice Mode significantly enhances ChatGPT’s conversational experience, providing lifelike and personalized interactions, accessible for desktop users. This rollout is just one part of OpenAI’s ongoing work to make ChatGPT more interactive, natural, and enjoyable for users worldwide.
