In Short

  • Google used an iPhone 17 Pro Max during Gemini Spark demo
  • Pixel fans questioned why Google skipped its own flagship phones
  • Some users believe it hints at deeper Google-Apple AI collaboration

Google spent most of its Google I/O 2026 keynote talking about AI agents, smart glasses and the future of Gemini across Search, YouTube, Gmail and Docs. But somewhere between all the futuristic demos and AI announcements, viewers noticed something unexpected on stage — Google was using an iPhone 17 Pro Max during a live demo.

Naturally, the internet had questions.

The moment happened during a demonstration of Gemini Spark, Google’s new personal AI agent designed to complete tasks on behalf of users. While the company already has its own flagship Google Pixel smartphone lineup, it chose Apple’s latest iPhone for the live showcase instead. That single detail quickly became one of the most discussed moments from the event.

Pixel fans might feel amused, confused and slightly hurt

For many Pixel fans, the moment might feel slightly painful.

Google has repeatedly marketed Pixel phones as devices built specifically for the AI era. Over the past few years, the company has heavily promoted how tightly Gemini AI integrates with Pixel hardware and software. That is why it was surprising — and even ironic — that when it came time to demonstrate one of Google’s biggest AI products live on stage, the company reached for an iPhone instead.

At the same time, some users online defended the decision and argued that the moment perfectly reflected Google’s larger software-first strategy.

“There's a huge difference between Google and Android. Google at the end of the day does not care about the hardware that you use,” one user wrote on X.

“Google I/O is strictly for showcasing software which Google software surprisingly is.. wait for it.. also on other competing hardware! WOW!” the post added.

Is this connected to Apple’s AI plans?

The iPhone appearance also sparked another theory online — that the demo may be indirectly connected to the growing AI partnership between Google and Apple.

A user pointed toward reports that Apple’s revamped Siri experience and future Apple Intelligence features could be powered by Google’s Gemini AI models.

“I think they're using an iPhone for the new Gemini + Siri collaboration for AI,” another user wrote online.

Google has already confirmed that Gemini models will power future Apple Intelligence features, making the iPhone appearance at I/O even more interesting for some viewers.

What exactly is Gemini Spark?

The device may have stolen attention online, but Google’s actual announcement was Gemini Spark itself.

Google describes Gemini Spark as a personal AI agent inside the Gemini app that can take actions on behalf of users under their direction. Powered by Gemini 3.5 and Google’s Antigravity system, Spark is designed to perform long and complex tasks in the background.

The feature is part of Google’s broader push to bring AI agents into everyday consumer products, turning Gemini into something closer to a digital assistant that can actively complete tasks instead of simply answering questions.

Still, despite all the AI announcements at I/O 2026, one of the event’s most viral moments ended up being surprisingly simple: Google showing off its futuristic AI on Apple’s biggest iPhone.
