Honda's first electric SUV, the 0 Alpha, now on Indian roads
Honda Cars India has commenced pan-India public road testing of its upcoming electric SUV based on the Honda 0 Alpha concept, with the made-in-India EV expected to launch around 2027.
by Saumya Shubham Jha · India TodayHonda Cars India has officially begun road testing of its first upcoming electric SUV in India, marking a major milestone in the brand’s electrification roadmap for the country.
The company flagged off a pan-India test run of the prototype from its facility in Tapukara on March 16, initiating an extensive Public Road Verification programme that will evaluate the vehicle across diverse Indian driving conditions.
The prototype being tested is based on the Honda 0 Alpha concept, which was globally revealed at the Japan Mobility Show 2025. The electric SUV will be manufactured in India for both domestic and export markets.
Testing across real-world Indian conditions
As part of the test programme, engineers will assess the SUV’s durability, handling, ride comfort, efficiency and overall reliability across a wide range of environments including highways, city roads and challenging terrains.
The testing phase will also simulate India’s demanding climate conditions. The vehicle will undergo validation in extreme summer heat and monsoon conditions, while the charging system will be evaluated across multiple charging infrastructures to ensure everyday practicality for Indian users.
According to Takashi Nakajima, President and CEO of Honda Cars India, the testing phase is crucial to ensure the vehicle meets the expectations of Indian customers.
"India has unique driving and climate conditions, and it is important for us to test our electric vehicle thoroughly in real-world environments. This programme reflects Honda’s global engineering strengths combined with a strong focus on local customer needs," he said.
Honda restructures global EV plans
The development of the India-bound electric SUV also comes amid a broader shift in Honda’s global EV strategy. In a surprise move, the Japanese carmaker recently cancelled the larger Honda 0 Series SUV and its sedan counterpart just months before their planned production start in the United States.
The decision is part of Honda’s restructuring efforts as it recalibrates its EV investments in response to evolving market conditions and financial pressures.
However, the smaller and more accessible Honda 0 Alpha remains on track and is expected to play a key role in the company’s EV push in markets such as India and Japan.
‘Thin, Light and Wise’ design philosophy
The electric SUV embodies the core development philosophy of the 0 Series — “Thin, Light and Wise.” The approach focuses on aerodynamic efficiency, lightweight engineering and intelligent packaging to maximise performance and usability.
Despite its sleek and low-slung profile, the SUV is designed to maintain practical ground clearance suited for Indian roads. Honda’s packaging strategy also enables a compact footprint while preserving a spacious cabin for passengers.
Futuristic design with digital lighting
Visually, the 0 Alpha adopts a futuristic design language with integrated digital lighting elements.
At the front, the headlights, charging lid and illuminated Honda emblem are housed within a unified digital screen area, creating a clean and high-tech appearance. At the rear, the SUV features a distinctive U-shaped lighting signature that integrates the tail lamps, turn indicators and reverse lights within a continuous lighting panel.
This minimalist yet advanced lighting setup reflects Honda’s push toward functional design that combines aesthetics with aerodynamic and lighting efficiency.
Expected launch timeline and specifications
The production-spec version of the Honda 0 Alpha is expected to launch in India around 2027.
While official specifications remain undisclosed, the electric SUV is likely to feature either a 60kWh or 70kWh battery pack, targeting strong real-world range and efficiency. At launch, the model is expected to use a single-motor front-wheel-drive configuration.
With India set to be both a production and export hub, the upcoming EV is expected to play a significant role in Honda’s long-term electrification strategy for global markets.
