Xiaomi is getting ready to launch its next foldable smartphone, and this time, the company is doing things a little differently. The Xiaomi 18 Fold is set to launch in China on September 7, and Xiaomi has now given us a first official look at the phone after several leaked images appeared online.

Notably, the new foldable also marks a shift from Xiaomi’s previous Mix Fold branding. With the Xiaomi 18 Fold, the company is bringing its foldable range under the Xiaomi 18 series and introducing a new design approach called “mid-fold.” The design sits somewhere between a traditional large foldable and a smaller, more compact foldable.

Xiaomi 18 Fold: A new ‘mid-fold’ design

In terms of design, Xiaomi’s new 18 Fold appears to offer a huge screen when opened, but users often spend most of their time using the smaller cover display. Smaller foldables are easier to carry, but usually compromise on screen size and overall usability. And this is why Xiaomi 18 fold could find a middle ground.

The phone will ship with a 5.38-inch cover display and a much larger 7.58-inch inner display. When folded, Xiaomi says the device is roughly the size of a passport and can be used comfortably with one hand. Once opened, the wider 7.58-inch screen is designed for multitasking and watching videos.

The first-look video also shows the phone in a deep red finish, with a horizontal camera island on the rear. The module houses three cameras and an LED flash.

Xiaomi has also revealed some details about the phone's internal design and confirmed that Leica has been involved in developing its camera system.

The phone will also feature a new “dragon bone” hinge, along with a simulation-based testing system designed to improve durability.

Xiaomi has confirmed that the foldable will be powered by its new Xring O3 flagship processor. The company is moving away from the Qualcomm Snapdragon chips used in previous Mix Fold models and bringing its own silicon to the foldable.

The phone will also be among the first devices to use LPDDR6 RAM, with Xiaomi positioning the new memory standard as another upgrade for the device.

According to tipster Bald Panda, the Xiaomi 18 Fold could pack a 6,000mAh battery, along with 67W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. If accurate, this would give Xiaomi an advantage over Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold range, which has traditionally offered smaller batteries.

The 67W charging could also be a major selling point, especially for users who want to quickly top up a large foldable. However, these battery and charging details have not been officially confirmed by Xiaomi yet.

Other leaked specifications include a possible 200-megapixel primary camera and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

The Xiaomi 18 Fold will be unveiled alongside the Xiaomi N70 Pro, N70 Max, N90 Max and Xiaomi Pad 9 Pro Max at the September 7 event. The tablet is also expected to use the Xring O3 chip.
