Maruti Suzuki has taken a significant step in India's alternative-fuel mobility journey by beginning customer deliveries of the WagonR Bio-Flex, the country's first series-production passenger car capable of running on ethanol-rich fuel blends. Contrary to initial expectations that the model would be limited to fleet operators, the company has now made the hatchback available to private buyers as well.

The automaker recently handed over the first batch of vehicles in New Delhi, with deliveries including both individual customers and members of the Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA). The move marks the commercial debut of a flex-fuel passenger vehicle designed to support India's growing ethanol ecosystem.

Priced at Rs 7.24 lakh (ex-showroom), the WagonR Bio-Flex is based on the top-spec ZXi+ manual variant of the standard WagonR. While visually almost identical to the regular hatchback, the flex-fuel model carries unique Bio-Flex branding and has undergone substantial engineering changes beneath the skin.

At its core is Maruti Suzuki's familiar 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, producing 91hp and 114Nm. However, the powertrain has been extensively modified to operate on a broad range of ethanol-petrol blends, from E20 all the way to E100. To enable this flexibility, the vehicle receives ethanol-compatible fuel injectors, revised fuel lines, an upgraded fuel pump, a recalibrated engine control unit and an ethanol-content sensor.

The launch comes at a time when India is actively promoting higher ethanol usage as part of its strategy to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, strengthen energy security and support domestic agricultural industries. With fuel standards for higher ethanol blends now being introduced, vehicles such as the WagonR Bio-Flex are expected to play a key role in assessing the viability of flex-fuel technology in the mainstream passenger vehicle market.

While Maruti Suzuki has yet to announce official fuel-efficiency figures for the Bio-Flex variant, ethanol-based fuels typically deliver lower mileage than conventional petrol due to their lower energy density. The standard WagonR 1.2-litre manual, for reference, carries a claimed fuel-efficiency figure of 23.56kpl.

The WagonR Bio-Flex is currently offered in a single fully-loaded trim and retains the equipment list of the regular ZXi+ variant. Features include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, six airbags, electronic stability control, rear parking sensors, power windows, rear AC vents, front fog lamps and electrically adjustable outside mirrors with integrated turn indicators.

With deliveries now underway, the WagonR Bio-Flex moves beyond being a technology demonstrator and enters the hands of everyday consumers, providing an early glimpse into how flex-fuel vehicles could fit into India's future mobility landscape.
