People mocked his dream of cracking JEE from a village. Now he's joining IIT Bombay

"I hail from K Durga Camp in Sindhnur Taluk, Raichur district, one of the most underdeveloped parts of Karnataka," says B Jayakrishna Srinivas.

The statement is easy to overlook. After all, K Durga Camp is a place few outside Karnataka's Raichur district have heard of. Yet, it was from this little-known village that Jayakrishna's journey to AIR 6 in JEE Advanced and the title of Karnataka's top performer began.

Born into a farming family and raised far from the country's coaching capitals, Jayakrishna grew up without the resources, financial advantages, or exposure that many JEE aspirants enjoy.

"Being a farmer's son, we don't have the financial background that many toppers have," Jayakrishna shares.

Yet, he never viewed his circumstances as a limitation. What he did have was determination. Years of disciplined effort, self-belief, and hard work helped him overcome the odds and reach the top ranks of one of India's toughest entrance examinations.

THE YEAR HE BET EVERYTHING ON HIMSELF

His path became even more challenging during his drop year. While many students enroll in expensive coaching programmes, Jayakrishna chose a different route, complete self-study, supported by NLearn from Narayana.

The decision invited skepticism.

“Many people used to demotivate my parents, saying, ‘How can he study at home and crack JEE?’” he recalls.

But he refused to let those doubts define him.

Instead, he turned isolation into focus and uncertainty into determination.

THE POWER OF STRONG FUNDAMENTALS

Jayakrishna’s preparation was built on consistency rather than shortcuts. During his drop year, he followed a rigorous routine, studying in five sessions a day, each lasting between two-and-a-half to three hours without breaks.

Unlike many aspirants who rush into advanced problem-solving early, he spent his school years strengthening his basics.

“During the 11th and 12th, I focused on building my fundamentals strong through my local college. I did not go too deep into JEE-level preparation then. The real JEE preparation happened during my drop year through self-study with the help of NLearn from Narayana," says Jayakrishna.

His philosophy is simple but powerful: understanding comes before hours.

“A student with deep fundamentals who practices less will almost always outperform a student with shallow understanding who grinds 14 hours a day," he adds.

For countless JEE aspirants searching for the perfect strategy, his success serves as a reminder that quality of learning often matters more than quantity of study.

SUCCESS, SILENCE AND STAYING GROUNDED

Behind Jayakrishna’s remarkable achievement lies an equally remarkable mindset.

His motivation is not limited to securing a rank or entering a prestigious institution. It is driven by a desire to excel wherever he goes and to improve the financial condition of his family.

“My motivation is that I should be the best in every field I enter, no matter how much time or effort it takes. Along with that, I want to uplift my family’s financial condition," he further adds.

To deal with pressure, he follows an unusual rule: he keeps his achievements private until the job is done.

“I don’t tell anyone anything until the final task is completed," he shares.

That approach helped him stay free from expectations and external pressure. In fact, even after scoring an extraordinary 99.98 percentile and securing an Open Rank of 413 in JEE Main, he chose not to share the news widely.

“Only after my JEE Advanced exam was done, I shared it with everyone," he adds.

The result? A performance that placed him among the very best students in the country.

THE NEXT STOP: IIT BOMBAY

With AIR 6 in hand, Jayakrishna is now looking at what many consider the pinnacle of engineering education in India.

His preferred choice is Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay.

“The brightest minds in India study there, and I admire its culture,” he says.

For a student who spent much of his academic journey away from the spotlight, the opportunity to learn alongside some of the country's most talented minds represents another step forward in an already extraordinary journey.

A JOURNEY WITHOUT AN END GOAL

Despite achieving what many would call a lifelong dream, Jayakrishna refuses to view this as a finish line.

“There is no such thing as an ultimate goal in life for me. The day I set a final goal and achieve it, I will stop there, and I never want to stop," he explains.

It is a philosophy that perhaps explains his success better than any study plan ever could. For him, achievement is not a destination; it is a continuous process of becoming better every day.

Jayakrishna also believes that institutions must be accountable when it comes to students’ trust and personal information. “Mistakes do happen. But when it involves lakhs of students’ personal data, authorities must take it seriously and ensure stronger security in the future,” he further adds.

His response reflects the maturity and awareness expected from someone stepping into a future leadership role.
