Red alert for rain: Karnataka to witness heavy downpour as monsoon enters
The IMD has issued red and orange alerts as the southwest monsoon brings heavy rain to Karnataka. The spell is crucial for kharif sowing but may also cause localised flooding and travel disruption.

- Coastal and interior Karnataka are set for intense rainfall till June 11
- Five districts face extremely heavy rain warnings for Tuesday, June 9
- Bengaluru may see thunderstorms, cloudy skies and cooler minimum temperatures
The southwest monsoon has continued its steady advance across southern India, bringing widespread rainfall to Karnataka and prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue red and orange alerts for several districts over the coming days.
According to the IMD, the strengthening monsoon is expected to trigger intense rainfall across coastal and interior parts of Karnataka between June 9 and June 11.
The weather agency has placed Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Chikkamagaluru and Shivamogga under a red alert for Tuesday, June 9, warning of extremely heavy rain, while several other districts remain under orange alert.
The latest warning comes as the monsoon gathers momentum after advancing into additional parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on Monday, June 8.
MONSOON'S MARCH CONTINUES
The southwest monsoon is India's main rainy season, typically lasting from June to September and accounting for nearly 70% of the country's annual rainfall, making it crucial for agriculture, reservoirs, drinking water supplies, and hydropower generation.
As the monsoon current strengthens over the Arabian Sea, Karnataka is among the first states expected to experience a significant increase in rainfall.
Bengaluru is likely to receive heavy showers and thunderstorms over the next few days, followed by generally cloudy skies and intermittent rain through the week.
As a result, the minimum temperatures in the city are also expected to dip gradually, bringing relief from the summer heat.
But Karnataka is just another stop along the way for India's southwest monsoon.
IMD has said that the weather conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to advance further over the next few days. Besides Karnataka, the system is expected to spread into additional parts of Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, while strengthening over the Bay of Bengal.
The IMD has also indicated that eastern states such as Odisha, West Bengal and Chhattisgarh could see increasing rainfall activity as the monsoon pushes northward.
For farmers across Karnataka, the timely arrival of widespread rain is particularly important as the kharif sowing season begins. However, authorities have advised residents in districts under red alert to remain cautious, especially in low-lying and landslide-prone areas, as heavy downpours may cause localised flooding and travel disruptions.
WHEN WILL THE MONSOON REACH NORTH INDIA?
The monsoon's progress has raised hopes for an early arrival in northern regions.
The southwest monsoon has been advancing steadily across the southern and central parts of the country after making further progress on June 8.
While the exact timing of its arrival in northern India will depend on evolving weather conditions, the monsoon normally reaches Delhi toward the end of June.
The IMD will continue to monitor its progress and issue regular updates as the rain-bearing system moves northward across the country.
