What if you could buy a compact car that sips fuel like slowly, yet has the confidence to tackle rough roads and slippery terrain? For years, that combination has been missing from the Indian market. But Maruti Suzuki may finally be preparing to change that.

The country's largest carmaker is gearing up to introduce the Fronx Hybrid later this year, and our spy shots revealed an important detail that could make the upcoming crossover even more appealing. Alongside the highly anticipated hybrid powertrain, the Fronx is set to receive an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system as well.

A look at the rear axle shows extra drivetrain components, suggesting the vehicle is equipped with an AWD system.

Recent spy shots show a Fronx test mule wearing a hybrid badge and carrying a large roof-mounted sensor setup. However, the biggest clue lies underneath. A closer look at the rear axle reveals additional drivetrain hardware, strongly indicating the presence of an AWD system.

AWD finally coming to the Indian-spec Fronx

Before off-road enthusiasts get too excited, it is worth noting that this is unlikely to be a hardcore four-wheel-drive setup. Instead, expect a lighter, efficiency-focused AWD system similar to the one offered on the Grand Vitara. Such a setup automatically distributes power between the front and rear wheels when required, helping improve traction on slippery roads, loose surfaces, and mild off-road trails.

While it may not feature a transfer case or low-range gearing, it could make the Fronx one of the most versatile compact crossovers in its segment.

Hybrid powertrain to focus on efficiency

The Fronx hybrid is expected to use Maruti Suzuki’s new strong-hybrid system paired with the Z12E 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine.

The Fronx Hybrid is expected to adopt Maruti Suzuki's new strong-hybrid technology and it could use the new Z12E 1.2-litre three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, currently seen in the latest Swift and Dzire.

In its standard form, this engine produces 80bhp and 111Nm of torque. The hybrid setup is expected to be paired with an e-CVT transmission.

While the addition of AWD is significant, fuel efficiency is likely to be the Fronx Hybrid's biggest selling point.

If Maruti Suzuki manages to combine strong-hybrid efficiency with the added confidence of AWD, the Fronx could carve out a unique space in the market—offering buyers a practical urban crossover that is also capable of venturing beyond paved roads.

Familiar design

Visually, the Fronx Hybrid is expected to remain largely unchanged from the current model. Exterior updates are limited to hybrid badging.

Inside, the cabin will retain the familiar layout but could gain energy-flow graphics and selectable drive modes.

If Maruti Suzuki gets the pricing right, the Fronx Hybrid AWD may become one of the most interesting launches of 2026, giving Indian buyers something they've rarely had before, a small, affordable crossover that's both efficient and adventure-ready.
