The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has postponed the registration process for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027. The application window, which was scheduled to open on August 14, will now begin on August 27, 2026. The revised schedule has been published on the official GATE 2027 website at gate2027.iitm.ac.in. IIT Madras has also introduced changes to the registration process, including DigiLocker integration and live facial verification.

IIT Madras has introduced DigiLocker integration to facilitate document verification and streamline the registration process. Candidates should ensure that their DigiLocker account is active and linked to the required details before applying. Candidates will be able to submit their applications through the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) from August 27.

The postponement has also led to changes in the deadlines for submitting applications. The last date for regular registration without a late fee has been extended from September 21 to September 27, 2026. Candidates who miss the regular deadline will be able to submit applications with a late fee until October 5, 2026.

GATE 2027 REVISED REGISTRATION SCHEDULE

As per the updated schedule, application rectification will begin on October 14 and continue until October 21, 2026. The notification for examination city allotment is scheduled to be released on January 4, 2027.

The GATE 2027 examination dates, however, remain unchanged. IIT Madras will conduct the computer-based test on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027. The examination will be held over six days in multiple sessions.

Candidates are advised to keep track of the official GATE 2027 portal for further updates, including the admit card release date and other examination-related announcements.

NEW ROBOTICS AND AUTOMATION PAPER INTRODUCED

GATE 2027 also saw an introduction of a new paper in Robotics and Automation (RA). The examination will be conducted across 30 papers, with revised syllabi and paper codes for some existing subjects.

GATE scores are used for admission to postgraduate programmes in engineering and related disciplines at IITs and other higher education institutions. The examination is also used by several public sector organisations as part of their recruitment process.

Candidates should note that qualifying GATE does not by itself guarantee admission, scholarship or employment. The final selection depends on the eligibility and admission or recruitment criteria of the respective institute or organisation.
