A serious controversy has erupted involving Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, after it was used to generate non-consensual, sexually explicit images of women. Reports indicate that users on X (formerly Twitter) have been uploading photos of female celebrities, including Bollywood actors, and prompting the AI to “undress” them or replace their clothing with bikinis and transparent outfits. Unlike many other AI tools that have strict safeguards against such prompts, Grok reportedly complied with these requests, and the resulting morphed images were often displayed publicly in the chatbot’s media feed.

In response to this growing digital threat, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi formally wrote to the Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, on January 1, 2026. In her letter, she flagged the “gross misuse” of AI, describing the trend as a criminal breach of privacy. Chaturvedi emphasized that this behavior is not just limited to fake accounts targeting celebrities, but is also being used to harass everyday social media users. She called for urgent government intervention to hold big tech firms accountable and to ensure that digital platforms do not become spaces where women are silenced or victimized.

The controversy comes at a time when the Indian government is already tightening its stance on deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation. Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has recently reiterated in Parliament that deepfakes pose a “serious threat to democracy” and that the government is working on stricter regulations. Under existing IT rules, platforms are required to remove non-consensual explicit content within 36 hours. However, this incident with Grok has sparked a fresh debate on whether current guardrails are sufficient to handle the rapid evolution of generative AI and the lack of proactive filtering by some global tech companies.
