New Delhi: India on Tuesday tested the K-4 intermediate range ballistic missile from the nuclear-powered submarine INS Arighaat in the Bay of Bengal. The missile has a strike range of about 3,500 km and is a key component of India’s sea-based nuclear deterrence.

The K-4 missile had earlier undergone several tests from underwater platforms and was first test-fired from INS Arighaat in November last year. INS Arighaat, India’s second SSBN (nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine), was commissioned on August 29, 2024.

India’s first SSBN, INS Arihant, which became operational in 2018, is equipped with shorter-range K-15 missiles with a range of 750 km. The successful induction of K-4 missiles marks a major upgrade in India’s underwater strike capability.

India is set to commission its third SSBN, INS Aridhaman, in early 2026, followed by a fourth submarine in 2027–28 under the ₹90,000 crore Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) programme. Future SSBNs are planned to be larger and more powerful, with enhanced nuclear reactors.
