Since childhood, many of us have heard elders say: “If a cat crosses your path, wait for 10 minutes before you go.”

In Shakun Shastra, or the science of omens, a cat crossing the road is considered one of the oldest and most common signs of good or bad luck. But behind this belief, it’s not just superstition. There are also some practical reasons from the old days.

The Astrological Connection

According to astrology, cats are associated with Rahu, the shadow planet. Rahu is linked to accidents, obstacles, and negative energy. That’s why people believe that if a cat crosses your path, there could be hurdles in your work.  It is considered even more inauspicious if the cat crosses from left to right. If you are heading out for something important and a cat cuts across, it is believed the work may get delayed or face failure.

Other Cat-Related Omens

It’s not just about crossing the road.  If cats are fighting near your house or you hear them crying loudly, Shakun Shastra says it can be a sign of arguments at home or financial loss.  If a cat sneezes in front of you, that too is seen as inauspicious.

In such situations, people are advised to wait for some time before starting their journey.

What To Do If a Cat Crosses Your Path?

If you believe in this or even feel doubtful in your mind, traditional practices suggest a few simple remedies:  Wait for 1-2 minutes at the spot. It is believed that if another person or vehicle crosses that path after you, the bad effect gets neutralized.  Sprinkle a little water on the ground, or drink some water before you continue.  Remember your Ishta Dev or chant one line of the Hanuman Chalisa. This is said to remove fear and negative thoughts from the mind.

So while a cat crossing the road may not actually stop your luck, the tradition reminds us to pause, be alert, and start the journey with a calm mind.

Note: These are traditional beliefs and cultural practices. There is no scientific proof behind them.
