Bhubaneswar: The weather situation has sparked fears of a cyclone forming in the Bay of Bengal, which is likely to strengthen into Cyclone ‘Murasu’ and make landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast on November 3.
Different models have predicted landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast on November 3 in the morning. The landfall track is, however, not confirmed yet.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that a depression has developed over the southeast Bay of Bengal. “The system is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours and would be named ‘Murasu’ if it becomes a cyclone,” the IMD said. It is likely to move west-north-westwards and reach Andhra Pradesh coast by Monday evening.
The system may deepen further and could become a severe cyclonic storm and is likely to make a landfall on the southern Andhra Pradesh coast with wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph by 3rd November morning.
The system is likely to cross the coast between Nellore and Narasapur but the exact landfall location is not certain.
Significant to heavy rainfall is expected over most part of coastal Andhra Pradesh with very heavy rainfall over southern and central Andhra Pradesh on 2nd and 3rd November. As per Skymet’s forecast, these regions can receive heavy showers during this time.
At the same time, some parts of northern Tamil Nadu like Chennai, Tiruvallur and others can expect moderate rain on November 2 and 3. Ponneri, Gummidipoondi and Pulicat might witness rains owing to the system’s closeness to the Andhra coast.

Some areas of other districts of north Tamil Nadu like Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu are also expected to receive light to moderate rain. The system might induce gusty winds, thunderstorms and lightning in some interior pockets.
The influence of the weather system is likely to be felt more along the Andhra Pradesh coast, especially south and central parts. The northern part of Tamil Nadu could receive less rainfall.
But other weather models have shown differences in the system’s pathway and strength. The precise area of the landfall, strength of the cyclone and rainfall distribution remains to be seen. We will learn more about its movement in the next weather update.
Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has indicated that rainfall activity in Odisha is likely to increase from November 2 under the influence of the developing weather system.
Southern Odisha districts are expected to experience a greater impact, with strong winds and rainfall likely in several areas.
