Odisha Solar Capacity Crosses 1,100 MW Milestone

Odisha has changed its energy landscape, pushing past a cumulative solar capacity of 1,100 megawatts (MW). That surge in production is the result of a targeted push across utility-scale projects, industrial sites, and public infrastructure. Take Lok Bhavan, for example. The recent solar expansion there stands out as a clear symbol of the state’s commitment.
Odisha offers the highest domestic solar installation subsidy anywhere in India. The goal is to accelerate the Prime Minister Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme. For a typical 3-kilowatt (kW) residential rooftop setup, the central government puts in ₹78,000. Then the state government adds a top-up subsidy of ₹60,000. That means families receive a total support of ₹1,38,000 per household, putting Odisha at the front of the pack in clean energy affordability. It’s knocking down monthly electricity bills for thousands of citizens.

Oversight and direction come from a combined effort between the Department of Energy and the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (E&IT), led by Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) Shri Vishal Kumar Dev. ACS Dev has been pushing to make the subsidy process smoother and calling for residents statewide to get involved.
The administration is zeroing in on land-use innovation and new technology for energy solutions. Currently, the state is working on an Agricultural Photovoltaics (AgriPV) policy. This will let farmers grow crops under or beside solar panels, squeezing more value from every acre and boosting rural income. On top of that, the longer-term plan includes floating solar projects on industrial reservoirs and rolling out advanced battery energy storage systems — all designed to keep the power grid steady during peak hours and keep Odisha’s momentum strong.
