As the winter draws in, the drop in temperature and humidity levels can cause the skin to become dry, rough and itchy. For some people, they experience flaky skin, chapped lips and irritation.

Heating in the home dries the skin and cold air is less humid as well. Here are some tips to keep your skin happy throughout the season.

Daily cleansing and moisture: Use a good moisturiser as soon as you have showered or bathed and to the dry areas of your skin in between showers and baths. Creams and ointments tend to moisturise for longer than lighter lotions.

Skip super hot showers: It may be tempting to take a hot shower to warm up during the winter months, but doing so can dry out your skin, so be sure to keep your water temperature just a little warmer than room temperature.

Opt for a mild cleanser: Strong soap and heavily scented products may dry out the skin further. Selecting a mild, fragrance-free option can help preserve the skin’s barrier.

Look after your lips: always have lip balm in your pocket to reapply several times a day.

Keep hydrated: Your body might not tell you’re thirsty as much in winter, but you still need to drink plenty of water. Drink water regularly all day.

Protect exposed skin – Hand, face and other exposed areas are exposed when going out in cold or windy weather.

You don’t have to put together a fancy skincare regime just because it’s winter! Regular moisturising, cleansing and protection from the cold air will keep your skin going through the winter months.

See a dermatologist if the dryness is severe and painful or if it forms deep cracks and persists with redness or itching.
