Koraput: A cup of coffee is not always just about taste. Sometimes, it carries the story of the soil where it was grown. In Odisha, that story comes from Koraput, where coffee plantations amid picturesque hills, streams and lush greenery are gradually carving out a distinct identity.
Known for its distinctive Arabica flavour, Koraput coffee has been gaining popularity among coffee lovers. Now, efforts are underway to give the locally grown coffee a new regional identity under the name “Koraput Origin.”
For visitors to Koraput, the district is no longer just about its scenic hills, waterfalls and greenery. Coffee is increasingly becoming another attraction. Tourists can enjoy the natural beauty of the region while experiencing the distinctive taste of coffee grown in its highlands.
As its popularity grows, coffee cultivation is also becoming increasingly connected with Koraput’s local economy and tourism sector.
Coffee cultivation expands in Koraput
Efforts are underway to substantially expand coffee cultivation across the district’s hilly areas. Coffee cultivation, which covered around 4,000 hectares, has expanded to nearly 6,000 hectares this year.
Another major objective is to involve more tribal women in coffee cultivation and create opportunities for them to become economically self-reliant.
Along with government initiatives, coffee cultivation is also expanding through private-sector participation, opening up new livelihood opportunities in the region.
‘Koraput Origin’ to give coffee a distinct identity
As production expands, the focus is also shifting towards establishing Koraput coffee as a distinctive product in national and international markets.

This is where “Koraput Origin” comes in
The administration has initiated efforts to provide coffee produced in Koraput with a distinct regional identity under the “Koraput Origin” name. The initiative could help differentiate Koraput-grown coffee in the market and strengthen its recognition among consumers.
Such an identity could also help connect the product more closely with the region where it is cultivated, highlighting Koraput’s landscape, farmers and coffee-growing tradition.
Coffee cultivation brings new hope
For Koraput, these coffee plants represent more than just a crop. They carry hopes of better livelihoods, greater opportunities for local communities and a stronger identity for the region.
From small plantations nestled in the hills, Koraput coffee is gradually finding its place in the wider market.
The hard work of farmers, the aspirations of tribal women, administrative initiatives and Koraput’s unique natural environment are coming together to write a new chapter for the district—one cup of coffee at a time.
