Hindalco’s Baphlimali Mine in Odisha Receives ASI Performance Certification

Utkal Alumina International Limited (UAIL), a Hindalco Industries Ltd subsidiary, has secured certification under the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Performance Standard for its Baphlimali bauxite mine in Rayagada district of Odisha, marking the mine as the first bauxite mining operation to achieve the certification, according to the company.
The certification covers the full upstream chain at the mine, including the planning and extraction of bauxite, crushing at the site and transportation through the conveyor system. Baphlimali has an annual production capacity of 8.5 million tonnes and supplies bauxite to Utkal Alumina’s refinery operations, making it an important link in Hindalco’s integrated aluminium value chain.

The ASI Performance Standard assesses operations across environmental, social and governance parameters. Its scope includes biodiversity conservation, greenhouse-gas emissions, engagement with communities, human rights, occupational health and safety, and responsible business practices. The certification therefore extends beyond the mine’s production activities to the wider sustainability practices associated with its operations.
Baphlimali is operated by UAIL, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hindalco Industries and part of the Aditya Birla Group. The mine is located at Doraguda in Rayagada district and has been operating since 2012. Hindalco lists its lease area at 1,388.74 hectares, with total reserves of 196.98 million tonnes.
