Bhubaneswar: Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu is moving towards the Andhra Pradesh coast at a speed of 25 kmph and is likely to make landfall between late tonight and early tomorrow morning, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

As per the latest IMD update cited in the report, the cyclone has been moving west-northwestwards over the west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal during the past six hours.

At 5.30 AM, the cyclonic storm was positioned approximately 200 km east-northeast of Chennai, 210 km east-southeast of Nellore and 270 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam.

The weather department has forecast that the cyclone will continue moving northwestwards and cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narsapur, close to Ongole, between 11 PM tonight and 4 AM tomorrow.

During landfall, sustained wind speeds are likely to reach 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected in parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Speaking about the cyclone’s movement, meteorologist Biswajit Sahu said the system has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and is advancing towards the Andhra Pradesh coast at approximately 25 kmph.

He further explained that the cyclone’s influence, along with an associated trough, could trigger rainfall in several parts of Odisha.

Moderate rainfall is already being experienced in some coastal districts of the state, while similar weather conditions are likely to continue tomorrow. Isolated areas of southern Odisha may witness heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds.

However, the meteorologist clarified that the prevailing weather situation differs from that experienced during Cyclone Arnab. Unlike the earlier situation, the present weather system is primarily concentrated over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast.

Meanwhile, residents of coastal areas have been advised to remain alert and follow official weather bulletins as the cyclone approaches landfall.
