Odisha to Deploy Anti-Drone Shield and Modular Jetties Across 574km Coastline

To strengthen its 574.7-kilometer coastline and keep critical maritime gateways like the Paradeep, Dhamra, and Gopalpur ports secure, Odisha is introducing a round of high-tech defense upgrades. Director-General of Police Y.B. Khurania laid out the state’s plans to field advanced anti-drone systems and build new modular jetties. This shield aims to neutralize emerging aerial and maritime threats, recognizing that Odisha’s economic trajectory, sea trade, and public safety are completely intertwined with robust coastal protection.
Currently, over 700 police personnel make up the frontline defense, stationed at 18 marine police posts along the coast. They keep watch over the water with 15 fast interceptor boats, five drones, and five hired trawlers. On the tech front, officers are using the NABHAMITRA mobile app to track fishing boats in real time. Experienced hands are steering strategy too, with retired Navy and Coast Guard officers in the system for extra oversight.

To further modernize its maritime shield, the state has mapped out a series of near-term acquisitions and infrastructure builds. With 10 more interceptor boats and additional trawlers to soon boost patrols. Back on shore, the plan includes new mini control centers and an extensive CCTV network for fishing harbors and landing points to keep watch on trouble spots.
This entire vision came together at the State-Level Coastal Security Conference-2026, under the theme “Coastal Security Architecture: Challenges, Solutions and the Way Forward.”
