WhatsApp iOS users might get a new encrypted cloud storage backup feature soon

WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new Android feature that will allow users to back up their WhatsApp chats on its own encrypted cloud storage. Now, reports have revealed that WhatsApp is planning to bring the same feature for iOS users as well.

According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, Meta-owned app is currently testing the feature on iOS. WABetaInfo discovered this feature on beta version 26.28.10.16 of WhatsApp for iOS.

Currently, WhatsApp allows users to backup their chats data to Google Drive, and iCloud for Android, iOS, respectively.

With the upcoming feature, users can choose between Google Drive/iCloud and WhatsApp’s cloud storage solution to backup their chats. Currently, the WhatsApp’s cloud storage solution reportedly offers 2GB of free storage.

However, WhatsApp might also offer a paid storage subscription that will allocate users to 50GB cloud storage plan, which could be priced at $0.99/month.

For security of the back data, WhatsApp let’s users create a passkey, a password, or a 64-digit encryption key for their encrypted cloud storage account. In addition, WhatsApp also offers end-to-end encryption by default for the backed up chats on WhatsApp’s cloud storage. Users can turn off the encryption by switching back to Google Drive (on Android) or iCloud (on iOS), as encryption is optional right now for these cloud storage solutions.

Note that the WhatsApp encrypted cloud storage feature is currently under development for both Android and iOS. Currently, we don’t have any information about it’s roll out timeline. But once its development is near completion, you can expect it to be available on the beta channel for beta users before rolling out to everyone.
