Intel Joins Elon Musk’s Terafab AI Chip Project

by · LatestLY

Intel has announced a strategic partnership with Elon Musk’s Terafab AI chip project, joining SpaceX and Tesla in an ambitious effort to manufacture high-performance processors. The collaboration aims to scale the production of silicon necessary for Musk’s expanding robotics and data centre infrastructure.

Following the announcement on Tuesday, Intel shares rose by nearly 3%. The chipmaker confirmed it hosted Musk at its campus over the past weekend to finalise discussions. This move follows Musk’s earlier indications that Tesla would seek to build massive artificial intelligence fabrication plants to support autonomous driving and humanoid robot development. Terafab Project: Elon Musk Confirms To Launch Tesla’s Major Initiative in 7 Days To Boost Domestic AI Chip Production.

Intel Role in Musk’s AI Ecosystem

Intel stated that its involvement will focus on the design, fabrication, and packaging of ultra-high-performance chips. The objective of the Terafab project is to generate 1 terawatt of compute power annually. This massive output is intended to fuel future breakthroughs in AI and robotics across Musk’s various ventures.

The partnership comes at a critical time for Intel, which has been working to regain its footing in the competitive AI hardware market. Under the leadership of Lip-Bu Tan, the company has undergone aggressive restructuring, including asset sales and job cuts, to improve its financial health. Intel has recently seen its finances stabilise due to increased processor demand and significant investments from the United States government and Nvidia.

Expansion of Texas Manufacturing Hub

Last month, Musk detailed plans for SpaceX—recently merged with xAI—and Tesla to construct two advanced chip factories at a large facility in Austin, Texas. One of these plants is dedicated to powering Tesla vehicles and humanoid robots, while the second facility is designed to support AI data centres located in space.

The collaboration with Intel provides the manufacturing expertise required to bring these large-scale facilities online. For Intel, securing such a high-profile partner serves as a boost to investor confidence, reinforcing the company’s turnaround efforts as it seeks to compete with other major chip designers.

SpaceX IPO and Strategic Shifts

The news of the Intel partnership coincides with reports that SpaceX has confidentially filed for an initial public offering in the United States. Analysts suggest this could become the largest stock market listing on record, with the company targeting a market launch later in 2026. Elon Musk's Tesla, SpaceX Unveil ‘TERAFAB’ Project to Target 1 Terawatt AI Chip Capacity.

By aligning with Intel, Musk’s Terafab project gains access to domestic manufacturing capabilities at a time when the United States government has become a primary stakeholder in Intel. This alignment strengthens the domestic supply chain for advanced AI components used in both terrestrial and aerospace applications.
