Greece Pushes Regional Cooperation and EU Ties as It Takes Helm of Black Sea Economic Bloc

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis has met with the Secretary General of the Permanent International Secretariat of the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC), Ambassador Lazar Comanescu, as Greece formally assumed the organization's rotating presidency, with the priorities of regional cooperation, economic development and closer ties with the European Union taking center stage.

Greece's presidency, themed "Moving Forward: Promoting Regional Economic Cooperation in the Wider Black Sea Area," was outlined by Mr. Gerapetritis during the meeting, where he laid out the country's key objectives.

Mr. Gerapetritis said Greece would focus on advancing implementation of the BSEC Economic Agenda and improving the organization's overall effectiveness, while also prioritizing stronger regional connectivity and people-to-people diplomacy among member states.

He further stressed Greece's role as both a European Union member state and a longstanding supporter of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization, emphasizing the importance of deepening cooperation between BSEC and the EU.

The Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation, established in 1992, brings together countries bordering or near the Black Sea to promote economic integration and stability in the region.

Greece's presidency comes at a time when regional connectivity and economic coordination in the wider Black Sea area carry added significance amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe.

The meeting between Mr. Gerapetritis and Ambassador Comanescu is expected to be followed by further diplomatic engagements as Greece works to advance its presidency agenda over the coming months, with Athens positioning itself as a bridge between BSEC members and the European Union.
