Stormy Weekend Ahead as New System Brings Heavy Rain, Falling Temperatures Across Greece

Greece is bracing for a sharp turn in the weather starting Friday, as a system moving in from the northwest brings heavy rain and thunderstorms expected to persist through Sunday, forecasters said.

Former National Meteorological Service director Theodoris Kolydas said Saturday and Sunday will see the most intense conditions, with rain and storms spreading across most of the country.

He said forecasting models show daily rainfall totals reaching roughly 99 millimeters on Saturday and 90 millimeters on Sunday in some areas, warranting close monitoring in the highest-risk zones.

Kostas Lagouvardos, a meteorologist and research director at the National Observatory of Athens, told Orange Press Agency that fair weather will hold through Friday morning before deteriorating sharply by afternoon, with rain and storms first appearing in the northwest.

"Saturday looks like a difficult day," Mr. Lagouvardos said, forecasting widespread rain, potentially heavy in central and southern areas, alongside strengthening winds.

Northerly winds will intensify further Sunday as temperatures drop, with rain expected to ease by midday before tapering off, in what Mr. Lagouvardos described as unsettled, "typically autumn" weather.
