Crete Braces for More Flooding as Storm Dumps 2.5 Months of Rain in 48 Hours
by ANTHEE CARASSAVA · iefimeridaCrete remains the epicenter of Greece's latest storm system, with authorities issuing an emergency 112 alert as intense rainfall is expected to persist through Sunday, forecasters said.
According to meteo.gr, the storm will intensify in the coming hours with fresh thunderstorms, keeping conditions severe across Crete's mountainous, semi-mountainous and northern areas through Saturday night, before gradually easing by Sunday afternoon following scattered rain and local storms through midday.
The village of Anogeia recorded the heaviest rainfall, with nearly 500 millimeters falling between Wednesday afternoon and Friday midday, meteorologist Christina Rigou of Mega television said — roughly 2.5 months' worth of rain in just 48 hours.
Mrs. Rigou compared the figures to the devastating Storm Daniel of 2023, noting extreme rainfall totals across northern Crete.
Greece's National Meteorological Service (EMY) said strong rain and storms will persist in the southern Aegean through Sunday midday, with locally intense northeasterly winds reaching 8 to 9 Beaufort across the Aegean through Saturday afternoon, gusting up to 90 kilometers per hour. Crete and the Dodecanese, including Rhodes, face the heaviest impact, while conditions gradually improve elsewhere.
Attica will see increased cloud cover with possible morning rain in northern and mountainous areas, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 21 degrees Celsius — several degrees cooler in the north — and northerly winds gusting up to 90 kilometers per hour before easing in the afternoon.
Thessaloniki, by contrast, is expected to see sunshine with highs reaching 24 degrees.
