Ukraine 'Kamikaze' Sea Drone Found Armed With 200kg of Explosives Off Greek Island
by ANTHEE CARASSAVA · iefimeridaGreek military intelligence and counter-terrorism units are examining a high-tech explosive-laden sea drone discovered by a fisherman off the island of Lefkada, in an incident that has raised alarm about the Ukraine-Russia conflict's reach into the Ionian Sea and the security of Mediterranean shipping lanes.
The unmanned surface vehicle, identified as a Magura V3-type kamikaze drone, was reportedly armed with approximately 200 kilograms of explosives and equipped with multiple detonators. Investigators found four pages of handwritten technical notes on the vessel's wiring and operation.
The Greek military has not officially confirmed the payload, but sources close to the investigation told Reuters and local media the craft was live and functional at the time of discovery.
Retired Coast Guard Admiral Nikos Spanos described it as a professional military platform employing low-observable technology to evade radar, with waterjet propulsion and high-capacity batteries giving it an operational range exceeding 2,000 nautical miles.
"This is a robust military system designed for offensive missions," Mr. Spanos said.
The leading investigative theory is that the drone was targeting shadow fleet tankers carrying Russian oil through Mediterranean shipping lanes but drifted off course following a signal failure. Investigators have not ruled out that it formed part of a broader Ukrainian-led operation.
The drone has been transferred to a specialized military facility in Attica for forensic analysis to determine its precise origin and intended target.
The discovery underscores the expanding geography of maritime drone warfare and the risks it poses to commercial shipping across the Mediterranean.
